If there were a Rock n Roll Hall of Shame, who would you induct?
Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 01:41 PM by Philosoraptor
Me? Zager and Evans, all boy bands, Madonna, Cher, Duran Duran and Duran, the Archies, gary puckett and the union gap, Kiss, Abba, Weezer, black oak arkansas, guess who, dianah ross, grand funk railroad, air supply, to name but a few.

"Criteria include the lack or absence of influence or significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll,"

but especially the B and C list ones who were blatantly derivative or obvious gimmic bands:

Pretty Boy Floyd, Warrant, Trickster, Jackal, Stryper, Black n Blue, Kix etc.

Of course, KISS should be the first band inducted.

We'll spare Bryan because of that one! If not for the song, per se, then for the deep philosophical discussions about whether or onot he sang "Me and my baby did it 69" near the end of the song.

I contend that he did!

24. Half your band wouldn't count because they're not really Rock & Roll
Madonna has been one of the biggest innovators in her genre of music with reinventing herself each time to keep her sound & style fresh. She has been a major influence of a generation of singers that followed her.

HOWEVER

She doesn't do Rock & Roll, neither do the boy bands, Diana Ross or Air SUpply.

But based simply on your criteria - Madonna would more than qualify. Just because you do not like her music doesn't mean she isn't an innovator

Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 05:26 PM by chrisau214
But as to the OP most of the bands there aren'te even rock.

KISS didn't produce the greatest music ever although it isn't as bad as many of their critics claim. 'Deuce' is a great song. 'Rock and Roll all Nite' is a great song. They have several other anthemic songs as well. But, music aside, they can't be included because they undeniably changed the way concerts are performed. Virtually every musician in every genre from rock to country to rap now puts on a KISS show when they perform live. The fact that Gene Simmons is a self-admitted whore doesn't change any of this.

I guess ABBA is soft rock but I have to grudgingly admit that when an old ABBA song occasionally comes on the radio I listen and happily sing along. Despite having just admitted this I will never admit it.

Madonna is not rock but she is hugely influential. Thus she can't be included.

Solo Diana Ross is not rock but her work with the Supremes is classic and timeless. She can't be included.

The Archies? One hit wonders shouldn't be significant enough to be considered shameful. And that one hit is a fun bouncy song that you can dance to. In all honest it would never have occured to me to even think to consider them.

Grand Funk and The Guess Who are pure garage band rock. I love bands that sound raw with almost zero production values. So I couldn't include them.

Duran Duran sucks. There is no way around this. Their records always sounded like they were either warped or being played at the wrong speed. But then I heard they same sound when they were played on MTV or the radio so I guess it was just their natural sound. But as much as I dislike them they were, unfortunately very influential on the look and sound of the early MTV era.

Cher is...well she's Cher. She has a couple of songs that I like and she tolerated life with Sonny Bono. She pranced around on stage in her fifties with her ass hanging out. I'd feel bad if she were included so I have to pull her off the list.

I'm not really familiar enough with any of your other choices so I'm almost inclined to dismiss them as being too insignificant.

For a word on the insignifigance of boy bands check here:

He beat up one of his wives and she died from the injuries. No charges were ever filed against him because he owned the small town where it happened. Every now and then her parents show up on a talk show, still trying to get justice. He is also suspected in the deaths of several other wives.

"Now it is common knowledge that if you have enough money you can get away with "suspicious circumstances" and murdering your wife, i.e., Jerry Lee Lewis, entertainer extraordinary (four or five wives died mysteriously"

67. Well, let's see, where to begin....
All heavy metal and punk bands, especially the ones prominent in the 80's, Ted Nugent, Michael Bolton, Aerosmith, Madonna, The Sex Pistols, KISS, Devo, Tiffany, Britney Spears, Debbie Gibson, and any other blonde bubblegum tweenie-set singers, The Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, Brandi, David Cassidy, Sean Cassidy, The Partridge Family, and.........oh, hell, I could go on all night, so I might as well stop now!

Proof that you can still sing like shit and make stuff that barely qualifies as music and have critics infatuated with you.

Poison, Cinderalla, RATT....a lot of 80's hair bands...sure, there were some good hair bands, but IMO most of them were lame.
