Need advice: Anybody here buy a car out of state? |
|
A friend of mine who lives here in Maryland just bought a car in New Jersey (her boyfriend lives up there) and is having a very hard time getting Maryland tags for it. Here's her email to me...does anyone have any suggestions? She's been to the MVA a number of times and has pretty much received no help from them and the dealership in Jersey seems clueless as to what she needs to do as well.
Thanks for any help!
All I'm trying to do is transfer the tags from my old car to my new car. You wouldn't think that it would be such a pain... but apparently it's stumped me so I'm not sure how other people manage to get it done. Maybe the problem is that my car is financed and that I bought it from an out of state dealership? I dunno!
So far the MVA has told me to fill out an "Application for Certificate of Title"... and I have the odometer statement, the inspection, proof of insurance, and bill of sale but I don't seem to have a "Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin"... the dealership (in Jersey) seems puzzled that I would need this because they wanted to know if I was doing my own "title work"... well I don't have the title because it's financed. I just want to be able to drive my car with md tags.

1. I think you'll need the tell your lender than you intend to retitle in |

Maryland. I'm pretty sure that most states now require that the car be titled in the state in which you intend to register. I know that's the case in Idaho as I'm doing the same thing right now with a car from Oregon. Which means that your bank will have to surrender the current title to Maryland, which may be hassle.

3. I don't know if this will help, but |

I live in southern Arizona and I get tons of abandoned vehicles due to the human smuggling operations around here - one vehicle we captured was built in the US for export to Mexico...it normally would have been illegal in the US but it apparently had whatever it needed allowing it to be registered here as well.
Anyway the point of this was that the MVD inspector figured all this out by the stickers on the door and under the hood...doubt if that is your friend's problem but thought I would toss it in to help with the confusion...;-)

It's unbelievable how convoluted all this is. I can't figure out why the dealership just can't contact the MVA and work all this out. My friend is running around in circles between them.
