5. who put the benzedrine in mrs. murphy's ovaltene?
I'll pass on the donut and take a dunkin bagel (splash....in the coffee!)

I met Slim when I was 15. He was a man full of stories. I've been a huge fan ever since.
Jon Hendricks I have had the pleasure of spending some time with. One of my fondest memories is of hanging out backstage with him when progspawn was a year old, and having Jon sing The New ABC to him. :D

You hip to Babs Gonzales and Leo Watson?

That Jutta Hipp with Zoot is fantastic. Apparently she settled down in Brooklyn (I think) and dropped out of sight. A friend of mine at Blue Note went to a lot of trouble to track her down a few years ago to deliver a royalty check. She was living very frugally and that gesture blew her away. I think she died a couple of years ago.

7. Yeah.
I'm hip to Babs, comes from my hometown, Newark, NJ as does Freddie Roach, '60 Blue Note organist and Sara Vaughan but I digress. Be-bop Santa is a gas and Leo Watson is a really crazy guy, a real monster.

Jutta settled in Queens, btw and I heard the royalty check was for 40 grand. Is your friend Tom Evered? He was my contact at BN when I was writing reviews for the Sunday edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and buying jazz for the area's foremost alternate music store, along with the folk, blues and world music. Dwayne Dolphin, the Pgh. based bass player was one of my regular customers.

Speaking of brushes with jazz greatness, Ozzie Cadena who produced Bird and Sonny Rollins, among others, for Savoy and Prestige used to have a record and dry goods store in New Brunswick, not far from where I used to live which I used to frequent. Periodically, he'd have jams in the back of the store with people like Booker Ervin and Dave Schnitter who, he said, was the most talented tenor sax man since Sonny Rollins. Schnitter and I ran in the same crowd for awhile. I've shaken hands with Jay McShann, Red Rodney & Bobby Hutcherson among others. Way back in 1972, Wilbur Ware and I got high in a doorway next next to Slug's on the lower east side of NY. He said my weed was just the kind that jazz musicians needed.

8. Ouch. Thats bad.
Been there. But you need 2 toilet paper rolls. One for the bong, one to stuff with tp to use as a filter (to keep the stink from permeating the hallway).
