not a gamer. Just want a sturdy, fast enough machine to write, surf, play music and vids and save images. I'd like it to last a couple of years. I like a sturdy machine. Nothing flimsy. Battery life between charges does not have to be spectacular -- I use it at home or office. Any ideas? What should I be looking for?

4. If you don't mind shopping from a Red company
Dell has at this moment three models listed from $530-$807. They were also advertising on TV about laptops allegedly for $639 or $689 sometime in the middle of Sunday night. I wasn't paying close attention so I have no idea of the details though.

5. I really like the factory-rebuilt Vaios on uBid
I bought a desktop there for about $1,000 five years ago and a laptop (I guess they call them notebooks now) earlier this year for about the same. You might be able to get lucky and get something similar for $800, especially as you aren't looking for gaming capabilities. Anyway, worth a look.
