What kind of raise did you get this year?

I had my review yesterday afternoon and for my hard work I got a 2.6% raise...

Doesn't even cover the cost of living. Heck GAS goes up by that amount on a DAILY basis.

Company is always crying poor mouth when it comes to employees.

about five years without a pay increase and I believe that was at a time Democrats were governors.

It may not be illegal but in my opinion it's immoral for a company not to give you SOME kind of pay increase. I'm sure the higher ups are doing quite well while those who create the wealth by their work struggle.

Esp. since we usually always work over the 37.5 hours per week we get paid for and don't qualify for overtime.

Our gas mileage just went up to 29 cents per gallon.
It was at 25 and then when gas went up to $3/gallon for the first time last year, it went up to 27 cents.

2. I don't know what to make of this co-worker. She grew up working class but she and her husband, although they have working class jobs (he works on the river but makes GOOD MONEY doing difficult work) they make a lot of money each year. They have no kids and have A LOT of discretionary income. She lives in the suburbs and has said that she believes the war on Iraq would have happened regardless of who was in the White House so she does not hold * responsible for the deaths.

To answer your question...I think she's brainwashed. She's not a deep thinker and takes pride in not reading books.

We usually get reviews at this time of year. But who knows, considering the many ways my company has transmogrified over the past year.

Raises come with the calendar year, usually. Not tied specifically to performance reviews--or so they say.

Effective immediately I will get an extra $5,000 a year, and then when my actual review comes up in December at least another 3%, maybe 4%!
I asked and they gave. I almost feel like I should have asked for more but I am not so astute in these situations and it was tough enough to go in and ask for what I got.
I will say I was somewhat surprised today when my boss told me about it. I had asked 3 weeks ago and was denied pretty much outright. Then yesterday I got a phone call at home from him saying he hadn't given up and was going to take another run at it with the "higher ups"

The union and I are still trying to figure out how this happened (and what can be done about it), since we had just finalized an agreement which stated that as a long-service part-timer I was entitled to a number of hours which matched the annual average I worked, based on the previous 3 years. It's part time might work, which is what fits best with my lifestyle. Most of the rest of part time night stuff in the area is retail which pays minimum wage. I get paid more than that and get some vacation pay, which is practically unheard of here for parttimers. There's also a fair amount of flexibility in the scheduling which is good for me. So, even though the raises are never going to make me rich, overall it's a good fit me me.

Every year my employers offer some excuse, a la "we're reinvesting in the company" or "it's time to tighten our belts." But every year they produce these offensively and narcissistically expensive Christmas cards featuring formal portraits of every sub-unit of the company's ruling family, so there's clearly enough money floating around for that.

And why do I want a Christmas card, for fuck's sake? I'm an atheist! I don't send them a volume of Bertrand Russell every holiday season, do I?

everybody knows them, and if you meet the monthly performance standards, you get a step increase. In my particular dept, they distribute them quarterly, so you could get one in the quarter or three in the quarter, then they would apply.

Sometimes you get one and sometimes you don't. We also have bonus opportunites for a variety of things and I have managed to get a few of those. Nice part about that is if your bonus calcs out to some weird amt likde $242.00..the company does the with holding, and SS Tax and 401K matching on whatever amount it would take to have you net out $242.00 so in addition to the actual bonus, I get matching in my 401k and it doesn't hurt me tax wise either.

It is so bad this year that all but three of my coworkers are seeking out second jobs (and all three of these are in married dual-income households). But, I've been pulling the belt tighter and tighter each month and I am definitely feeling the pinch (I have $1.63 to last me until september!!). a merit raise based on each person's work, is how you don't reward bad workers by not giving it to them, you only give it to the people who deserve it

Nothing tied to performance. Everyone got 3 percent, which is so frickin' generous compared with last years 2.5 percent. Now, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain who's raising our parking fees at the same time (last year's 2.5 percent "raise" was trumped by parking's 3 percent increase).

And yes, we MUST pay for parking--less if you hike from what I term Way Far Lot, or more if you can swing it, so you walk a shorter distance from a closer lot--but there are absolutely no accommodations for not paying for parking at all--especially if you live 25 minutes away, like I do, in a small town not on a bus line, and with a toddler in tow who needs to go to grandma's.
