I love Michael Caine - watched "A Shock to the System" - review |
|
I bought this DVD last week because it has Michael Caine and Swoosie Kurtz, two actors I love dearly. Swoozie I've loved since that TV show that she and Tony Randall did, ""Love, Sidney", which was brilliant and cancelled way too goddamn fucking soon and is a show that never, ever, in no way gets the critical accolades that it should.
It was a really cool movie until the end, when it ended without any resolution. Nor, I would say, with any warning. Which is too bad - another ten or twenty minutes would have made a solid, wonderful film.
But as it is, it's a half-ass film. One would almost think that Ron Howard directed it, but alas, he did not.
Quite disappointing. Easily the most disappointing Michael Caine film I've ever seen.

I saw it in the theater when it came out, and like you, I enjoy both Caine and Kurtz.
It was a decent black comedy sending up yuppie materialism and ambition - definitely a late 80's relic. I thought the ending was tidy and appropriately dark. "Boom!"
