2. I worked at the Horseshoe sportsbook the year he won |
|
Man, it's hard to believe that has been 16 years.
Anyway, you could see immediately it was a loudmouth launching pad. The other players couldn't stand him, especially the local guys who played against him in the regular poker games. Many of them told me he was an overrated player who got lucky on the big stage, but his day to day play wasn't very good.
If that was the case, he should have flamed out years ago and never been heard of again. I'm hardly an authority but I think he's done well in other major tournaments.
Now, of course, this new TV focus is made to order for him.
Amazing transformation for poker, because maybe a year or two before poker became a media and internet frenzy, the Las Vegas casinos were yanking or diminishing their poker rooms all over town. My poker playies buddies were thinking of quitting because there weren't any dependable games anymore.

3. He does know how to play |
|
I cannot deny that, he is just so...irritating, he is like a smug know it all, he cannot play a single hand without spouting some crap...
Maybe this is how he unnerves players, because if I played against him, my fist, just might tag his smug face...

I am watching the 2004 WSOP, and he had ace/queen, and the other guy had pocket 7's, and the guy got a 7 on the turn, and Phil was pissed, screaming around saying, how the F do you call me with pockets 7's? And I was like...what a complete and utter dumbass, crybaby, wannabee....
I don't know how those other poker players stand this guy, and to boot, Phil is on some other poker shows as commentator, its like I cannot escape this idiot!

7. I Stopped Watching Celebrity Poker Showdown Because Of Him. |
|
Even though I was disappointed to see Phil Gordon leave the show... I was willing to give Hellmuth a chance. --- You're right, he really IS annoying to watch and to listen to. Babble-babble-babble. (Shut UP already!)

8. I have a love/hate relationship with Phil. Actually I find Mike |
|
Matasow and a couple of others more annoying than Hellmuth, and they don't have the bracelets to back their trash talk up.
When asked if professional poker players ever make stupid mistakes, Phil Ivey said, with tongue firmly planted in his cheek, "The only one who never makes a mistake is Phil Hellmuth.
But Doyle rules the poker world. I also like Daniel Negraneau.

I've been enjoying watching him get ripped up in that High Stakes game on GSN. I love how all the other players paid him like $15,000 to NOT leave the table and then busted his ass.
I think my favorite player is Howard Lederer.
Negraneau is fun to watch. He's chatty, but not arrogant like Hellmuth.

11. Negraneau is my favorite |
|
Not only does he have mad skill, he is a genuinely nice person. I saw one WSOP event (on TV) a couple of years ago and he kept running into some rich dick who kept telling Daniel to respect him because he was so rich. After the constant "respect me" bullshit, Daniel told him that he does respect him, but he has the same level of respect for the bathroom attendant who works for a living. Classic.
Also, Tony G is a bigger asshole than Matasow and Hellmuth combined.
