Many great bands from Rock & Roll Camp for Girls played tonight
Edited on Sun Aug-13-06 12:54 AM by swag
at the Bagdad Theater in Portland, OR. 8 or nine more vids will go up tomorrow, but the first band to play, made up of 8 and 9 year old girls, did a fantastic Velvety song called

"Billy, Milley and the Rockcamp" (youtube vid taken on my digital camera)

Band: Music Mania

Grace - Guitar
Raven Schofield - drums
Amelia Wall Babson - keys
Caitlin Gast - vocals
Band Manager: Cathy Foy

lyrics:

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh (x4)
I wore my coat
one chilly day
(a chilly day)
My name is Billy (Billy)
I am really silly (really silly)
And my wife's name
is Lilly my daughter's
name is Milley
I thought about the
past. (The past)
When Milley had
a blast (A blast)
At the rockcamp (Rockcamp)
They had a band
it was named the
Rocking Turtles (Rocking Turtles)
They were great!
They were rocken and rollen
(Rocken and rollen)
Rocken and rollen
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! (x a million)
Oh yeah!
1.2.3. Girls Rule!

More youtubes tomorrow. This was a brilliant fucking rock show of 20 bands with members of ages 8 to 18.

Such good music. So many band sounded like the Slits or PiL with a girl singer.

An amazing night, really. Jesus, I was so emotional.

6. They do two showcases per summer now.
The camp got going in the year 2000 in Portland. Now there are other camps springing up around the country.

13. Nah, we're mostly west-siders.
And I defer to the majority. I drink on the east side all the time, so I'm not missing anything if our event isn't east side.

If it's off the Max or a bus line, I'm happy. And if it isn't, I'm still happy.

Thanks for running the show.

21. You would have enjoyed it. There were no Jackie O Motherfuckers
to speak of, but there was a lot of originality, refreshingly little conventionality, and some aspirants to the throne of the Slits.

22. Another vid, this one by Pinion, three older girls who were camp interns
Pinion.

Sorry so damn dark and that my camera cuts off the song, but maybe you can get the idea. This was a very good band.

25. "What Do U Want From Me?" (a vid of one of the best bands).
Edited on Sun Aug-13-06 06:22 PM by swag
Aitch took this vid - she had much better luck with the lighting than I did. A mixed ages band. The singer Hildi was 10 or 11, and I got to congratulate her in the lobby of the theater after her performance. After me, both Aitch and Robin offered their praises to her. She looked a bit overwhelmed with attention and her mom looked sort of apprehensive.

Annie Soga, the bassist, also played with the Otter Pops. My camera died before I could get any vid of them, but their two guitarists Shredder and Shreddery Bear were wonderful.

Can't put my finger on exactly which northern England late 70s, early 80s band What Do U Want From Me? reminds me of, so I'll just say that I found this song to be the union of the Slits with the Crucifucks that we have all been waiting for for so long.

What Do U Want From Me? performs "What Do U Want From Me?"

Christina Kiser - drums
Hildi Larson - vocals
Annie Soga - bass
Band Coach: Annie Soga
Band Manager: Leigh B.

"What do U Want from Me?"

It was all about me
'til I turned into a tween
This is how my story goes

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!? (X4)

Shoes too small and pants too long
can't fit in the clothes I want

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!? (X4)

The older kids
They call me young
They say I can't go with them

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!? (X4)

R-rated movies are out of the question
And staying up late is not an option

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!? (X4)

Mom says no more TV, it's all about chores
Mopping the floors
Oh, what bores!

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!? (X4)

27. Aqua Crush plays "Girls Rock"
Chloe starts off sounding like she's the next Andy Gill, but then veers into a much more Wire-like style.

Aqua Crush|"Girls Rock"

Aqua Crush

Chloe - guitar
Gabby - bass, tamborine
Lydia - drums
Zoe - Vocals
Band Coach - Leslie

"Girls Rock"

girls rock
girls rock
don't close your eyes
'cause every time you
open 'em I'll be there
so don't worry 'cause
girls rock girls rock
don't worry
'cause I'll never
let you down
girls rock they do

28. I wanna go
i can play bass really good and I sorta can play guitar. At my summer camp (that i go to, i'll be a CIT next year-w00t!) theres rock n roll stuff like that but most of the girls suck (no offence).

That camp looks like fun! Where is it & what are the dates for next year (if you have any).

31. It's a day camp. They'll help you find a place to stay.
Also, they have some financial aid available.

Sorry that they don't have the 2007 dates yet.

You should get on their mailing list if you really want to go.

The women that run the camp have all been involved in some pretty great bands.
