Favorite Australian Made Movie
In the Dirty Dancing thread we were talking about some of the other great movies like DD that we watch over and over again. Two of the tops being "Muriel's Wedding" and "Strictly Ballroom". Along with those 2, probably 2 other great Australian movies that I adore are "Pricilla, Queen of the Desert" and "Dead Calm" (great suspense movie, very little dialogue)

What are your favorite Australian-made movies!

1. moulin rouge

:hide:

considering its budget, i thought wolf creek was pretty effective at what it set out to do (mileage may vary on this film)

of course walkabout was one of the first australian films to get international attention, but i have not seen it since college, so i need to refresh myself... good idea for my queue

2. "Gallipoli," probably
Though I like a lot of others. Just saw The Dish and loved it, and Muriel's Wedding, among others, was a classic.

Great courtroom/wartime drama, made on a shoestring, with dynamite performances from Edward Woodward, Jack Thompson, Bryan Brown, and Lewis Fitz-Gerald.

This is a spoof tourism advert for Australia using footage from the film (NSFW):

6. Too many good ones. For screwball comedy, I'll take "Young Einstein".

7. I liked "Dead Calm" too.
I also liked "Japanese Story" with Toni Collete.

It was very sad---I think she is a very good actress.

8. Strictly Ballroom
So much better thna his follow-up, Moulin Rouge.

I would also list Gallipoli, Tim and Mad Max if that nutcase Mel Gibson weren't in all three! Oh how he has fallen!

15. Dead Alive (also known as Braindead)
I love your picks, too... but that one was a banner movie for the campy comedy-horror genre.

Bad Taste is up there, too... a little too over the top, though. (Or is that even Australian? Not sure...)
