We went to the orchard the other day... |
|
and brought back some perfect nectarines. :9
Canteloupes are not as good this year, but the corn and kale are first rate!

They are so dark, they look like plums when they are still on the tree.
But I also like McCoon and Northern Spy.

4. The backyard cantaloupes have been superb this year |
|
as has the watermelon.
I missed peach season this year.:( At least I will be able to go to an orchard in the next county in a couple of weeks for apples!

almost blood red this year. Pure heaven in a wedge! But it's been the backyard ones-the commercial ones have not been as good, what with the drought this year. My county has been designated Phase 3 drought now.
I heard the peaches did not do well this year but I'm not sure how the apples are. I'm hoping for some decent Granny Smith's.

13. I'm a bit worried about the crops. |
|
The drought has been really bad this year. Groceries will be expensive this winter, along with everything else.

14. What's bad for one thing always seems better for another. |
|
I've noticed that in drought years around here. The fruits will be smaller, but sweeter, and melons and peppers seem to thrive in those conditions. Things may still pick up for some late crops...I've got my fingers crossed, anyway.

You should see how pathetic the corn looks. It's just burned.
Too many farmers will be taking a loss and too many families will be scrimping for food this winter.

Maybe we should all start anticipating tough times to come, and build up the supplies.

I'm in the heartland and I'm telling everyone who is reading this-the crops are almost dead around here. I bet meat will be cheaper for a couple of months because the farmers will have to slaughter some of them d/t the drought. Veggies and grains will be much more expensive this winter.

20. Tell them to stock up now. |
|
Stock up on canned goods and such. Freeze some flour.
I bet, between the drought and the price of gas to transport everything, groceries will be outrageous this winter.

Did your son go to NYC? Where did he stay? You asked on the board a few months ago about reasonably priced places to stay. I was one of the folks who responded.

He stayed in a Best Western not far from where his friend was. He had a fabulous time; though mostly he stayed in the area. Thanks for asking! :hi:
