Name the greatest love song ever!
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 07:49 PM by lelapin
In your opinion, of course. Can deal with traditional love, or family, or friends...

On edit, I realized I should name my own :eyes: "Something" by George Harrison gets me every time :D

13. I dunno...
I'm looking through my music library...(which is really big, so it takes quite some time to go through it all)...haven't found anything that would qualify as a great love song...though my music library isn't big on love songs to begin with...I suppose that's an area of it that needs improvement.

Same goes with you :D I noted from early on in life that nearly every song I heard was about love. :D Interesting that even when one is slightly (or more) jaded with love, many make you smile. At least with me

29. Well, I will find references to love in songs that are clearly not love
songs.

I once read the lyrics to some Satanic Norwegian metal song and thought it was a paean to love (of course, I was reading Plato's Symposium at the time, so that might have done it...come to think of it, I think the song was called "Symposium." too )

Anyway, that's why I'm struggling to find a great love song...because I'm not sure if it's really a love song...and I'm really overanalyzing this whole thing, aren't I? :D

I could probably tell you if it's Welsh or Gaelic if I heard it (basically, if I can understand any of it, it's Gaelic, otherwise it's Welsh :D) *is also very much a Celtophile, though I think you knew that already* :D

That song was written by Ewan MacColl, one of Great Britain's finest folksingers (and most outspoken radicals). Many singers recorded it before Flack did.

Every Breath You Take - The Police. Before anybody else points it out, I do know it's about a stalker. I just find it romantic and at the same time I find it funny that every almost every DJ in America plays it at weddings.

Like a promise, you are, you are
Like a summer morning
Like a smile, you are, you are
Like that, like that, you are
All my hope, you are, you are
Like fresh rain in my hands
Like a strong breeze, you are, you are; like that, like that, you are

You are like the water of my fountain (something like that, you are)
You are the fire of my fireplace
You are like the fire of my bonfire
You are the wheat of my bread

Like my poem, you are, you are
Like a guitar in the night
My whole horizon you are, you are; like that, like that, you are

You are like the water of my fountain (something like that, you are)
You are the fire of my fireplace
You are like the fire of my bonfire
You are the wheat of my bread

You are...

...except that my "vinyl" was actually a 45 RPM single, with that on one side and the same song with English lyrics (that have absolutely nothing to do with the original Spanish ones) on the flip.

When paisley and I went down to visit her mother in Colombia nine years ago, we made a point of finding a copy on CD.

150. mine was actually vinyl copies of Casey Kasem's Top 40
my family had a friend who was a dj and he got the Top 40 on vinyl every week to play on the air. There were about five or six records in each box. And he gave them to us when he was done. I don't know what happened to them. Eres Tu was on one of the ones from 1973 if I remember right. I think we had 1973, 1974 and 1975. It's amazing to think it was actually done this way, with the records being delivered to the radio stations. I loved those records; another song that I remember being on them was "Jackie Blue". I wore that one out.

120. 18 years ago when hubby and I were planning our wedding
we really clashed on what our first dance would be. Everything I picked was "too discoey." I really wanted "Always" by Atlantic Starr which was a very popular song in 1988. He loves the Beatles and I really don't like them as much but told him maybe we could use "And I Love Her." He thought that song is too "one sided." What a jerk. Still is most of the time lately.

149. Don't forget the Jimmy Buffet classic ballad
Why don't we get drunk and screw...

I really do appreciate the fact youre sittin here
Your voice sounds so wonderful
But yer face dont look too clear
So bar maid bring a pitcher, another round o brew
Honey, why dont we get drunk and screw

Chorus:
Why dont we get drunk and screw
I just bought a water bed, its filled up for me and you
They say you are a snuff queen
Honey I dont think thats true
So, why dont we get drunk and screw

-- spoken: pick it coral reefers, here we go...

(swing instrumental)

Chorus:
Why dont we get drunk and screw
I just bought a waterbed its filled up for me and you
They say you are a snuff queen
Honey I dont think thats true
So why dont we get drunk and screw
Yeah, now baby I say, (lord!)

In Rabrrrrrr-world, there would be no appletini, chocotini, salmon-tini, cute-fluffy-bunny-tini or any nouveau crap like that. There would only be martinis. Gin, vermouth, olive. That's it.

I will order one of these nouveau crap drinks in ONE location, and only if a certain gorgeous, Bulgarian bartendress is working. Olga's apple-flavored martinis are quite delicious as is she. :9

But, other than that, if I want a martini, it's very dry, gin and an odd number of olives.

Now, there are two people who manage to do it:Isaac Hayes and those who are of the "serious music" school, colloquially known as "classical" music.

63. "In My Life" - Lennon/McCartney

There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

103. Pigs On The Wing - Pink Floyd
If you didn't care
what happened to me
And I didn't care
for you
We would zig-zag our way
through the boredom and pain
Occasionally glancing up through the rain
Wondering which of the buggers to blame
And watching for pigs on the wing

You know that I care
what happens to you
And I know that you care
for me too
So I don't feel alone
or the weight of the stone
Now that I've found somewhere safe
to bury my bone
And any fool knows
a dog needs a home
A shelter from pigs on the wing

112. My two cents:
'The Search is Over' by Survivor.

How can I convince you
what you see is real
Who am I to blame you
for doubting what you feel
I was always reachin',
you were just a girl I knew
I took for granted the friend I have in you

I was living for a dream,
loving for a moment
Taking on the world,
that was just my style
Now I look into your eyes,
I can see forever
The search is over,
you were with me all the while

Can we last forever,
will we fall apart
At times it's so confusing,
the questions of the heart
You followed me through changes,
and patiently you'd wait
Till I came to my senses,
through some miracle of fate

I was living for a dream,
loving for a moment
Taking on the world,
that was just my style
Now I look into your eyes,
I can see forever
The search is over,
you were with me all the while

Now the miles stretch out behind me,
loves that I have lost
Broken hearts lie victims of the game
Then good luck,
it finally stuck like lightning from the blue
Every highway's leading me back to you
Now at last I hold you,
now all is said and done
The search has come full circle,
our destinies are one
So if you ever loved me,
show me that you give a damn
You'll know for certain the man I really am

I was living for a dream,
loving for a moment
Taking on the world,
that was just my style
When I touched your hand,
I could hear you whisper
The search is over,
love was right before my eyes

I mist up every time I hear it.

119. Air that I Breathe by the Hollies
If I could make a wish,
I think I'd pass.
Can't think of anything I need -
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound,
nothing to eat, no books to read.

Making love with you
has left me peaceful, warm, and tired.
What more could I ask?
There's nothing left to be desired.
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak.
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep.

Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe
and to love you.
All I need is the air that I breathe,
yes, to love you.
All I need is the air that I breathe.

Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak.
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep.

126. Same here
and I even like Whiney Houston singing

Also "Up where we belong" sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes

These were two movies that I knew I had to see because of the songs

Paul McCartney's "Maybe I am amazed"

Maybe I'm amazed
at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way you pulled me out of time
and hung me on a line
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way I really need you
Maybe I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Maybe I'm a man
and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way you help me sing my song
Right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way I really need you
Maybe I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Maybe I'm a man
and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand
Oh, oh, oooooo, yeah, hey
Oh, oh, oooooo, yeah, yeah, ooo
Oooooooooooooo
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way you help me sing my song
Right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed
at the way I really need you
Oh, oh, Ooooooooo, yeah, hey
Oh, oh, Oooooo, yeah, oooo

Phil Collins' "Can't stop loving you"

So youre leaving
In the morning
On the early train
But I could say everythings alright
And I could pretend and say goodbye

Got your ticket
Got your suitcase
Got your leaving smile
Oh, I could say thats the way it goes
And I could pretend and you wont know
That I was lying

Because I cant stop loving you
No, I cant stop loving you
No, I wont stop loving you
Why should i

We took a taxi
To the station
Not a word was said
And I saw you walk across the road
For maybe the last time, I dont know

Feeling humble
Heard a rumble
On the railway track
And when I hear the whistle blow
I walk away and you wont know
That ill be crying

Because I cant stop loving you
No, I cant stop loving you
No, I wont stop loving you
Why should i

Even try
Ill always be here by your side (why why why)
I never wanted to say goodbye
Im always here if you change, change your mind

So your leaving
In the morning
On the early train
But I could say everythings alright
And I could pretend and say goodbye
But that would be lying,no

Because I cant stop loving you
(cant stop loving you)
No, I cant stop loving you
(I wont stop loving you)
No, I wont stop loving you
Why should I even try
Because I cant stop loving you
(cant stop loving you)
No, I cant stop loving you
(thats all I can do)
No, I wont stop loving you
Why should i
(why should I)
Why should i
(tell me why)
Why should I even try

124. Etta James - At Last
At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
At last the skies above are blue
And my heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you
I found a dream that I can speak to
A dream that I could call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known
You smiled, and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven

125. I'm a sucker for these three sappy songs by Stevie Wonder
Ribbon in the sky

Oh so long for this night I prayed
That a star would guide you my way
To share with me this special day
Well a ribbon's in the sky for our love

If allowed may I touch your hand
And if pleased may I once again
So that you too will understand
There's a ribbon in the sky for our love

Do...Do...
Do Do Do Do Do...
HMM HMM...

This is not a coincidence
And far more than a lucky chance
But what it is that was always meant
Is our ribbon in the sky for our love, love

We can't lose with God on our side
We'll find strength in each tear we cry
From now on it will be you and I
And our ribbon in the sky
Ribbon in the sky
A ribbon in the sky for our love

Do...Do...
Do Do Do Do Do...
HMM HMM...

There's a ribbon in the sky for our love

Overjoyed

Over time, I've been building my castle of love
Just for two, though you never knew you were my reason
I've gone much too far for you now to say
That I've got to throw my castle away

Over dreams, I have picked out a perfect come true
Though you never knew it was of you I've been dreaming
The sandman has come from too far away
For you to say come back some other day

And though you don't believe that they do
They do come true
For did my dreams
Come true when I looked at you
And maybe too, if you would believe
You too might be
Overjoyed, over loved, over me

Over hearts, I have painfully turned every stone
Just to find, I had found what I've searched to discover
I've come much too far for me now to find
The love that I've sought can never be mine

And though you don't believe that they do
They do come true
For did my dreams
Come true when I looked at you
And maybe too, if you would believe
You too might be
Overjoyed, over loved, over me

And though the odds say improbable
What do they know
For in romance
All true love needs is a chance
And maybe with a chance you will find
You too like I
Overjoyed, over loved, over you, over you

Send one your love

Send her your love
With a dozen roses
Make sure that she knows it
With a flower from your heart

Show him your love
Don't hold back your feelings
You don't need a reason
When it's straight from the heart

I've heard so many say that the days of romance are no more
And people falling in love is so old fashioned
But waiting are they the day they once let slip away
Hiding need to fulfill their heart's desire for love's passion

Send her your love
With a dozen roses
Make sure that she knows it
With a flower from your heart

Show him your love
Don't hold back your feelings
You don't need a reason
When it's straight from the heart

I know that people say two hearts beating as one is unreal
And can only happen in make believe stories
But so blind they all must be that they cannot believe what they see
For around us are miracles of love's glory

Show him your love
Don't hold back your feelings
You don't need a reason
When it's straight from the heart

128. I'll have to say "Stardust"
Originally written by Hoagy Carmichael in (I think) 1928. There's about a million covers of this song, as well.

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadow of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart

You wandered down the lane and far away Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now a stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by

Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely nights dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you

When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song

Beside the garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
Of paradise where roses grew

Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain

133. "Free In You" - Indigo Girls
A hard knock
A cold clock
Ticking off my time
A long look
But no luck
Couldn't seem to find
Or unwind
Into peace of mind
While I was trying

A quick glance
A big chance
My heart beat like a drum
I saw you
And I knew
Chances just don't come
Round again
Not like this
First a laugh
Then a kiss

And I'm free in you
I've got no worries on my mind
I know what to do
That's to treat you right
And love you kind
Thank you ever on my mind
Love is just like breathing
When it's true
And I'm free in you

The lost time
And self pride
Are my big mistakes
A clear voice
A bad choice
Sounding like an ache
In my day
Not too bad
But too real
To go away

But now I'm free in you

I've got no worries on my mind
I know what to do
That's to treat you right
And love you kind
Thank you ever on my mind
Love is just like breathing
When it's true
And I'm free in you

And I don't know
How you show
Such gentle disregard
For the ugly in me
That I see
That for so long
I took so hard
(I took so hard)
And I truly believe
(I truly believe)
That you see the best in me
(That you see the best in me)
I'm in love
We all love
And that thought
Sets me free

Free in you
Got no worries on my mind
I know what to do
That's to treat you right
And love you kind
Thank you ever on my mind
Love is just like breathing
When it's true
And I'm free in you
Yes I'm free in you

134. "Wichita Lineman"- Jimmy Webb
This is one of these reflective, introspective love songs that are meant to be played late at night, preferably on a real car radio while driving down a moonlit highway..

Timeless chords, a melody that is the essence of wistful, and minimalistic lyrics that seem to be about nothing in the abstract but on closer inspection, are really about everything:

I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload

I hear you singing in the wire
I can hear you thru the whine
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line.

I know I need a small vacation
But it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south
won't ever stand the strain

And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita Lineman
is still on the line.

Everybody knows Glen Campbell's version, but Jimmy Webb's own version on "12 Easy Pieces" and Scud Mountain Boys version on Pine Box are both my favorites.

154. True that--it's so elegantly simple, it would be hard to mess it up.
I haven't heard that any of the multi-octave chickie warblers like Mariah Carey have attempted it, and I hope to hell that never happens!

145. Beautiful - Gordon Lightfoot
At times I just don't know
How you could be anything but beautiful
I think that I was made for you
And you were made for me
And I know that I will never change
Cause we've been friends through rain or shine
For such a long, long time
Laughing eyes and smiling face
It's seems so lucky just to have the right
Of telling you with all my might
You're beautiful tonight
And I know that you will never stray
Cause ya been that way from day to day
For such a long, long time
And when ya hold me tight
How could life be anything but beautiful
I think that I was made for you
And you were made for me
And I know that I will never change
Cause we've been friends through rain or shine
For such a long, long time
And I must say that it means so much to me
Just to be the one who's telling you
I'm telling you
That you're beautiful

148. Here's a couple
None other than Sinatra called "Something" by the Beatles the most beautiful love song ever written.

Something in the way she moves,
Attracts me like no other lover.
Something in the way she woos me.
I don't wanna leave her now,
You know I believe, and how.

Somewhere in her smile she knows,
That I don't need no other lover.
Something in her style that shows me.
I don't wanna leave her now,
You know I believe and how.

You're asking me will my love grow,
I don't know, I don't know.
You stick around now, it may show,
I don't know, I don't know.

Something in the way she knows,
And all I have to do is think of her.
Something in the things she shows me.
I don't wanna leave her now.
You know I believe and how.

For the frustrated lover in me I am also partial to the Beatles' Girl:

Is there anybody going to listen to my story
All about the girl who came to stay?
She's the kind of girl you want so much
It makes you sorry
Still you don't regret a single day.
Ah girl! Girl!

When I think of all the times I've tried SO HARD to leave her
She will turn to me and start to cry;
And she promises the earth to me
And I believe her
After all this time I don't know why.
Ah, girl! Girl!

She's the kind of girl who puts you down
When friends are there, you feel a fool.
When you say she's looking good
She acts as if it's understood.
She's cool, cool, cool, cool,
Girl! Girl!

Was she told when she was young that pain
Would lead to pleasure?
Did she understand it when they said
That a man must break his back to earn
His day of leisure?
Will she still believe it when he's dead?
Ah girl! Girl! Girl!

160. WAIT- I GOT IT !
It's "The Dark Night of the Soul" by Loreena Mckennitt- check it out:

Source: http://www.sing365.com

The Dark Night of the Soul
------Loreena McKennitt

Upon a darkened night
the flame of love was burning in my breast
And by a lantern bright
I fled my house while all in quiet rest

Shrouded by the night
And by the secret stair I quickly fled
The veil concealed my eyes
while all within lay quiet as the dead

CHORUS
Oh night thou was my guide
of night more loving than the rising sun
Oh night that joined the lover
to the beloved one
transforming each of them into the other

Upon that misty night
in secrecy, beyond such mortal sight
Without a guide or light
than that which burned so deeply in my heart
That fire t'was led me on
and shone more bright than of the midday sun
To where he waited still
it was a place where no one else could come

CHORUS

Within my pounding heart
which kept itself entirely for him
He fell into his sleep
beneath the cedars all my love I gave
From o'er the fortress walls
the wind would brush his hair against his brow
And with its smoothest hand
caressed my every sense it would allow

CHORUS

I lost myself to him
and laid my face upon my lover's breast
And care and grief grew dim
as in the morning's mist became the light
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
there they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
there they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
