Movies you did not want to see at first but actually enjoyed
This thread got me to thinking...

I'm sure many of you refused to see a movie, anticipating that you'd really dislike it.

I'll start. I had heard good things about "Grosse Pointe Blank", but when I heard a description of it, I thought, 'Oh great, yet another comedy about a hit man, and mixed with cheesy 80's nostalgia to boot'. I had seen enough crappy Pulp Fiction ripoffs already (including the lousy "Two Days In The Valley".

Well, I finally saw it, and I thought it was damn hilarious. Dan Aykroyd was a riot!

Another one was the first "Ace Ventura". Thought it looked stupid, but I rented it anyway and thought it was pretty funny.

9. I'm not a Smith fan either
although he looked hella good in that movie...

but the movie kicked ass, imo. I highly enjoyed it and I am not a sci-fi, fantasy fan.

4. Glory Road.
God, is that a great movie, and I am not a basketball fan in the least. :hi:

And I just saw Raising Helen this AM and it was really good.

8. Marathon Man. Had NO idea what it was about, and was prepared to be
bored stiff.
Have seen it four or five times since. Great flick.

13. Because of Winn Dixie
My 9 yr old dtr had been bugging me forever to watch it with her, so I finally relented and I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised. A very sweet family film. Much better than I expected...and I'm not even a "dog person". :)

14. Heaven's Gate - because of the way it was bad-mouthed by everyone
But after seeing it for the first time many years ago, I came away thoroughly convinced that it's a masterpiece and it's now one of my favorite films. In fact, I'm watching it again right now. It's one of the most breathtakingly beautiful films ever made and the soundtrack is wonderful as well. While it's true that it moves slowly, I don't think every film has to involve the manic cuts and editing that seem to permeate our fast-food, hyperventilating and impatient era.

I'm not sure why this movie was panned by nearly every critic and why it's still so hated by some. It could be because it's one of the most left-wing, radical films ever made about the Old West, with such lines as "it's getting dangerous to be poor in America".
