To relieve stress and tension...go to a what?
Heard a radio commercial for a local firing range last night. They had the nerve to suggest going to their firing range (as in shooting guns) to "relieve stress and tension."

Does anybody else find this offensive? I mean, using a firearm for protection is one thing, but to relieve tension? Is that the kind of habit we want to reinforce? Someone gets stressed out, and then they feel the need to go shoot at something or someone?

Unbelievable.

1. I find it relaxing.
Focusing on the paper target makes me stop thinking about everything else. Besides, there's rush that goes with the noise and the flash and the recoil and seeing the bullet go right where I want it to. People ARE aggressive. Harmless activites like this help find an outlet for it.

3. I hope it is..
...just a harmless activity, as you say. Maybe I just worry too much.

6. I don't think target shooters are a threat
I know lots of responsible gun users. It's not something I'm into but I can understand the appeal.

2. Makes sense to me
but then again I grew up in a boonie town more-or-less in a CT state forest. Get pissed off, squeeze a few rounds off into the oak tree. Find yourself face-to-face with a bear or moose, fire a few rounds off into the oak tree. My closest neighbor growing up was 2 miles away so it didn't really matter. I wouldn't recommend that if I still lived in DC, Philly, NYC or Hartford though.

I'm one of those people who thinks liberals should be pro-gun. We're going to need them to fend off the conservative fundie rapturists.

5. I just wish there was some place I could go to shoot barrels of dynamite
Why aren't there any such firing ranges?

15. Doom and Doom II were video games in the 1990s.
They were first-person-shooter games. Among the bad guys to be shot en masse there were barrels of some explosive material that could be shot.

13. I was thinking more of Hunter Thompson's back yard
Apparently that was one way he had of relieving stress and tension. Even better if you're full of acid and bourbon, I suppose. Now that's my kind of target practice!

12. Monday Night Ladies Night at Reds Indoor Shooting Range!!!!!
A friend took me there, saying that it was a great stress and tension reliever - and she was right.

I went 3-4 times, discovered that I am a *lousy* shot, and squandered a few bucks on half-price ammo. It was cheaper than a massage, and it taught me a little bit about how to load, handle, and fire a gun.

17. "...I am a *lousy* shot..."
Keep your eye on the front sight. Make sure you see the flash. Otherwise you are blinking at the moment of ignition and taking your eye off the front sight. Sights are typically aligned for 50" for medium weight projectiles. Light practice grade bullets tend to print low on the target and targets closer than 50" print lower still.
