Are your local schools starting earlier in August? |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 11:11 PM by pstokely
Around, they don't seem be starting any earlier than last year, but it's earlier than five years ago. The tourism lobby is pushing states to force schools start after Labor Day, why don't they just adjust to schools ending in Late May? 20 years ago they would start after Labor and get out in Early to Mid June.

3. You probably get out in June |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 10:42 PM by pstokely
Most districts around here plan to be out by Memorial Day, most will be out before June begins even with a few snow days.

2. August 22nd here - WAY earlier... |
|
But no one's complaining because it's been raining for the past nine days with no end in sight. The kids will get out earlier in May which is a good thing, because that's our best month. Also, the semester will end before Christmas vacation which means the kids won't have to be worrying about exams right when they go back to school.

10. Starts the 22nd here, too, and gets out second week of June |
|
'course this is Beautiful California, the Land of Milk and Honey, where the days are glowing and long...and there are many reasons for schools to keep receiving Federal money for vacation days...um..teacher inservice days...um...state holidays...mmm...am sure there's a reason.
Actually, I think the school year in CA is the same as it is in NV where I used to teach...180 days for students, and 185 days for teachers.

4. Christmas falls on a weird time this year. + schools w/ Latino kids |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 11:09 PM by Nevernose
Christmas break starts on Friday the 15th (or Friday the eighth for certain bible belt colleges). Christmas itself falls on a Monday, which means the best time to have 2 weeks off is the 15th. That's earlier than usual, but not exactly unusual, so we start earlier than in most other years. My theory, anyway.
My theory regarding Latino kids? They don't start school until after Labor Day, in my experience. So the school district screws them by starting school as early as possible.

6. Later here in NC. Tourism industry pushed for late August start |
|
so more people could go to the beach. School now starts about 10 days later (mid-August)than when we moved here in 2000.

7. Thankfully, I live in a sane community - no school til after Labor Day |
|
and that's the way it should be.
Sadly, our system goes a week or so beyond Memorial Day, which is asinine, but there ya go.
School should start after Labor Day and end before Memorial Day.

8. July 31 In Seminole County FL |
|
Insane, huh?
Of course there are advantages to the semester ending before Winter break, but the real reason was the bloody FCAT and all the school districts trying to get the jump on others by having as much classroom time as possible before the big test.
Then, the tourism industry lobbied to have schools begin later, because August is a peak tourist month, and other states weren't starting as ridiculously early as many Florida districts. So, I think starting next year, schools can't begin more than one week before Labor Day.

The Tourism lobby pushed through legislation during either Tommy Thompson or Scott McCallum's term that prohibits schools from starting until either late August or Early September. The UW System is also prohibited by Wisconsin Law from starting fall classes before Labor Day, too.

14. August 14 here in Dekalb County, GA (Atlanta suburbs) |
|
My daughter just started pre-k....a big day for us! She'll get out the Friday before Memorial Day.
August 14 is ridiculous, though. I hope GA goes the way of other states previously mentioned & starts after Labor Day like the tourism industry is pushing for! When I was a kid, we'd start the day after Labor Day & get out around June 10, unless they had to add snow days at the end of the year (grew up in western PA.)

17. Schools start at the beginning of September in England. |
|
Having finished in mid-July for the summer holiday.
Universities traditionally kept to 3 10-week terms and would start sometimes in October - some have now changed and start in mid-late September.

21. The public schools started SUPER early this year |
|
like August 4th or something. We started the 18, but we were the last school in the area to start (we've always started a bit later than everyone else).
Glad i don't go to public school, even though they do get out like 2 weeks before we do. I guess that's an exchange for starting earlier...
