1. That is really sweet!

What it looks to me like you did; correct me if I'm wrong:

You mounted the block--looks like you used a whole cherry log--on a faceplate, clamped it with your tailstock and turned it to a cylinder. Or you turned a mortise in the base and used a chuck. If you've got a mortise chuck, that's definitely the way to go--polish the inside of the mortise, or fill it with black epoxy, and it's a decorative element.

Then you installed two steadies under the cylinder and hollowed the vase out with a Sorby hollowing tool. You then turned the rim.

Finally, you made a plug for the open end, stuck it in the opening, brought up your tailstock and turned the outside.

Finish? Tung oil, probably, applied by dipping your hands in it and working it into the piece while the lathe was running around 200rpm.

Very, very impressive piece.

But what kind of lathe do you have? That looks like it's at least 12" in diameter, which means a 14" log--so we're looking at 16" to 18" swing over the banjo. Big Vega maybe, a Powermatic if you're lucky or a Oneway if you just won the lottery.

I have GOT to get another lathe. Mine fucking sucks--it vibrates because the bearings are cheap Chinese crap, and it won't go below 1100rpm so rounding bowl blanks scares the shit out of me. Until I got this lathe, I never saw one you needed hearing protection to use.

2. Partially correct

What I did was google woodturning images and grab something off the web. Just wanted some graphic because I don't have any pictures of my own stuff up right now. :shrug: Sorry, wasn't trying to be deceptive or anything. :(

I have moved recently and am trying to get my shop set up here in Denton. I have half of an unconditioned double garage and it has been too damned hot too stay out there too long. Also, I will have to recondition and recalibrate some of my equipment

I have a Jet 1236 mid sized (about 36" long base) and a Jet mini. I had the mini up and running. but I broke the toolrest and need to order another or have one made. I also have a Shopsmith Mark V which I can turn on ... but I have to clean it up and re-calibrate, etc.

I will try to get some pics up of some of my own stuff.

As for the part you got right: when I win the lottery I am getting a Oneway ! LOL

This is why I have a compound mitersaw--to cut segmented turnings. Saves lots of wood.

I've done one segmented piece--a drum made from Brazilian pallet wood (the shell) and red oak (the hoops). When I get a new lathe, I'll switch to doing only segmented pieces. They're more fun.

4. pretty cool

I've never done a segmented project. I do inlay turqoise, etc. and plan to do more of that.

That computer program looks like it would be very helpful.
