What are your pet peeves?
Two of mine have to do with driving. I can't stand for people to be talking on their cell phone and trying to drive at the same time. I can't begin to count the dozens of near misses I've had from people who don't concentrate on driving, when they are behind the wheel.

Another pet peeve is, why don't cities make traffic lights synchronized? Sometimes I feel like I'm a red light magnet. And when there is no traffic in any direction, and still have to stop, for what seems like minutes, it is nothing more than a big waste of time and gasoline for me.

Also, I cannot stand when people chew food with their mouth open.

1. They are synchronized. They are timed to slow you down.
They do that in some parts of Ottawa, it really ticks me off sometimes.

3. Total strangers asking me how I'm doing
Sometimes I'll answer the phone at work and the first thing the other person says is: "How are you doing?" Maybe one of these days I should punish them by giving them a 15 minute rant on every thing that's going on in my life

This is written communication. I can respond when / if I feel like it and provide as much detail as I feel like. I just don't like being asked that on the phone by a stranger because it's obvious they don't really care

4. Stupid people in general
But specifically businesspeople who hide behind jargon like "proactive" and "change the paradigm" and "we'll talk offline" (when they're already face-to-face and just mean "privately" or "once we're out of this larger meeting"). People who talk like that should be hit repeatedly with a sock full of rocks.

Oh--and misuse of apostrophes, especially on house signs: "The Johnson's". YERGH.

5. Loud talkers on planes & trains
Frequent flyers say "well, wear headphones". Yeah, then I miss the announcements - not too important when flying, but on our public transportation, it's nice to know ahead of time that the train is pulling over and will probably be 30 minutes late.

9. I've got a ton of 'em...
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 10:02 AM by NewWaveChick1981
Here are a few:

* People who smack their food and/or crack their chewing gum. :grr: Also, people who eat while they're talking on the telephone.

* People who don't pay attention when they drive. This includes cell phone usage (hands-free or otherwise), talking to passengers while driving, and fumbling with something while the car is moving. 65 mph is no time to start yelling at your kids. :scared:

* People who expect me to say, "yeah" or "hmmm" or "that's right" during the course of a conversation when I'm just trying to listen to them. It serves no useful purpose. My husband falls into this category (as does his entire family). :eyes: There is this really annoying pause where they expect you to acknowledge what they're saying even when you have been having this conversation with direct eye contact the entire time. Example: They say: "I went to the store the other day." And I'm waiting for them to tell me whatever it is they are going to tell me about the store. I found out that there is this unwritten family rule that says I'm supposed to say something like, "Oh really? What did you do at the store the other day?" I have never had a conversation with any other people--ever---like the ones with hubby and his family. :eyes: (Hubby's mom has all kinds of narcissim issues anyway.) I told hubby I did not converse like this. I refuse to play whatever passive/agressive attention-grabbing game is involved in all of that, so when he pauses, I am silent. I am listening, but my listening is not punctuated by "uh huh" and "yes". It's not necessary and annoys the hell out of me! When it's appropriate, I respond or ask questions (i.e. a normal conversation process).

It takes FOREVER to tell a story like that. Example: "I went to the store the other day." "Oh, really? What did you do at the store?" "I bought groceries." "What groceries did you buy?" "Apples. And bananas." "Did you buy anything else?" "Yes." "What did you buy?" "Paper towels." "Did you buy anything else?" "Yes." "What else did you buy?" and so on. :grr: Normal people say: "I went to the store the other day. I bought apples, bananas, and paper towels, along with some other stuff."

11. LOL! They have a very weird family dynamic, especially when
they have conversations. :yoiks: A simple nod of the head won't do. It really is a weird passive-aggressive attention grab. :( Hubby learned that this is how conversations are supposed to go, and I've had to educate him on it.

And you're right---the uncomfortable silence is kinda funny sometimes...

53. pet peeves
Mine are going to sound bitchy I think
1)I hate it when people tell me to smile.
I spend most of my time in the stratosphere so if I am not smiling the way I am supposed to it's because I am thinking, not because I am a bitch or I hate you. I hate it when people tell me to smile.
2)People who act all liberal about gay people but are the first to use words like faggot and bulldyke as soon as gay people leave the room or make other snide remarks. I am one of those people you can't read, I totally pass; I've never even had a gay person clock me until I told them, and I am by far not the only one, so I get to see how people act both around gays and when they leave the room, and alot of times it is not pretty.

Those are the only two I can think of right now. I loved your example about the conversation NWC81. That is so true. I guess I just thought of another one. The men in my family will call you up and then they will NOT TALK on the phone. I have to do all the work. They will sit there in dead silence after you say hello. I hate talking on the phone anyway, and this drives me insane. I have to ask them all kinds of questions or otherwise it is just completely dead silence the entire time. Sometimes I just sit there and count to see how long they will go without saying anything but that is uncomfortable and feels like a waste of time. So I screen all my calls.

60. god i hate that
I work for an answering service for drs and hospitals. Anyway when some people call they tell me thier whole problem and then the last thing they say, without pause, is hello?. then I say yes I'm here, they continue and say hello? hello? again.. it it just so goddamn irritating.. Its not like they have a bad phone connection or anything. Just because I'm quite does not mean I'm not listening or I hung up the phone, when I need more info I'll ask for it. I just want them to spit it out so I can get the message out quicker.

23. Oh, so many...
Some of my odder ones:

I hate doodling. If someone doodles on my desk calendar, I white it out. I laminate all instruction cards, etc, for my pledge drive volunteers so nobody can doodle on them.

Donut/bagel pinchers. It drives me insane when somebody cuts or pinches a bit from donuts or bagels that are out for all and puts the other part back. Take the whole thing, you don't have to eat it.

People who think there is nobody behind them and stop dead while walking, shopping, etc. I guess that one isn't quite as odd.

24. Good point on shoppers.
It drives me nuts, whenever they either stop, in the middle of an aisle, so you can't get around them, or if there are two or three family members, and they stop at an aisle intersection to talk, as if they are the center of the universe. I want to just ram them with my cart, and then look back at the carnage.

42. Speaking of shopping carts....
I hate it when people leave their carts anywhere they feel like in the parking lot. How many times has a shopper banged their cart into your car, without so much as an "excuse me," or allowed a cart they just abandoned to roll, until it smacks another vehicle, and then they walk away, as if they had no responsibility in the matter?

Or how about people who park where they aren't supposed to, like they are better than the rest of us?

The other is named Oscar.. for obvious reasons... he's a dead ringer for his daddy.... and looks just like them.

They're fairly well house trained, although oscar, well, he's got issues.. but that's a WHOLE 'nuther Oprah. They don't like to walk on leashes and are better off just being allowed to follow along. They don't like to ride in the car unless they're in the trunk though.

This happens alot to me. I was at a Pretenders show a couple of weeks ago and about 5 guys (40ish men) were standing behind me yakking away - very loudly to be heard over the music - about work/sports/etc. Next to me were two young women who talked constantly until I think they got sick of me staring daggers at them and they moved.
Don't they go to concerts to hear the music....not themselves talking?

29. Here are my pet peeves:
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 11:00 AM by KC2
On the Phone: When people interrupt, smack their lips while talking/eating on the phone, make little sound effects (tisk, tisk sounds) as if 6 seconds of silence is a bad thing (if they only knew how it hurts my poor ears), and people who yell into the phone when calling their loved-ones...you know the kind... "HONEY, GET OVER HERE, TO THE PHONE...NOW!!" Ouch.

Driving: People who can't negotiate a winding road, with their road hog SUV's, and take up both lanes. Hello!
And, why do people drive slow in the FAST LANE? Ugh.

When Traveling: The overhead bin hogs. They take so much crap on a plane that they can't even lift it into the overhead bin. Invariably, they look at my hubby like he is their personal bell hop..."Can you please help me?" Usually, dear hubby, doesn't even have to be asked. And he never complains. But it is sooooo annoying (and possibly damaging to his back). What were they going to do with all of their crap, if there wasn't a strong man around to help them. Hello!

This Administration: Top on my list is Bush's fake Texan drawl. Give me an f'ing break! Nobody, especially not a Yale graduate, says Umerika instead of America. Knock it off dumbo, and get a better speech coach to learn how to talk like a real Texan. And, Bush's stupid-a$$ news conferences....only when there is something good on TV, because they all know, by now, that the whole country is sick and tired of his lame excuses about why he started this war. Give it up Chimp!

End of rant. I shall have some coffee now. Strangely, I feel better. Thanks.:)

56. people who misspell y'all
It is not spelled "ya'll". The apostrophe goes where the missing letters would be. You all = y'all.

End. Of. Rant.

58. Popping/smacking/cracking gum.
The most disgusting trailer-trash habit EVER. No one should EVER hear or see anything in anyone else's mouth! Whan did it become socially acceptable to crack gum in public? I just want to punch them in the teeth.

Also, people who talk loudly on their dumb-ass cell phones in public. Do you think the rest of us need to hear all about your personal business? Ugghh.

59. While driving...
people who'll pull out in front of me and drive slower than I was, especially when there was plenty of room to pull out behind me.

Groups of people who stand right in the entrance/exit of a store, making it very difficult to get by. Can ya move over a few feet?

People who throw trash on the street when the trash can is ten feet away. :grr:

64. The driving thing used to happen to me all the time, when I lived in
Oklahoma, for a little over a year, while I was going to school. Okie drivers have been the worst offenders, when it comes to that.

61. People who complain about Health Problems
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 03:45 PM by Poetmnwj28_F_M
And They know they Have them and they are Non-Compliant with their Doctor's orders. Sorry, I've worked in healthcare albeit as a peon and not very high up on the social food chain in the system but that to me is one of my biggest pet peeves. To me it is sheer Stupidity and Lack of total Judgement and most of these are people that have health insurance or some that are smart enough to know better because they have seen the consequenses of what others have gone through by not taking care of themselves. I simply tell Tell them To SHUT-UP If they Aren't Going to Buck-Up and do what they are supposed to do. Or stop doing anything and be happy about Dying because that is the End result of what is going to happen.

The other pet peeves just show the lack of brain cells that people use for lack of respect for them selves.

A new poster but a Long Time Lurker

65. I HATE the plastic sticky tape that closes new CD cases.
It always is such a bitch to get off and it NEVER comes off in one clean piece, it inevitably peels off in these microscopic little pieces that you have to pick off over the course of five minutes, just to get to the damn CD! That very experience happened to me this morning, so it's fresh in my mind.

Another pet peeve: people who drive for miles and miles in front of you with their turn signal on. I find that EXTREMELY annoying.

That's it for now, but I'm sure I could think of many others if I wanted to. :D

67. People that measure distances in time units
I just noticed a post where someone said that someone lived 15 minutes from the other person. That means nothing to me. The distance would depend on the speed limits, amount of traffic and number of stop lights. Why not just say how many miles away the two people lived?
