1. I love the Beatles but they're only #8 on my top 10 list |
|
It was quite controversial because people found out that I had ELO rated higher!

2. Not sure how old you are, but.... |
|
I think you had to live through their time, to truly appreciate their innovativeness, and the many contributions they made to the music world, and society. The were the trendsetters of the sixties.

You're absolutely right with everything you said (Beatles broke up when I was still young). ELO has had more impact on my life than the Beatles - simple enough. I just happen to enjoy their music more!

5. I was at an Italian Restaurant a while back.... |
|
And they had a Frakie Avalon tape playing...
I pulled the bus girl over and said do hear this music...
She said, "Um, yeah" looked around to see if the owner was in earshot and said, "It Sucks..."
Then I told her that when she got home tonight she should get on her knees and thank the Rock God's that the Beatles came around and simply destroyed that kind of music...
That is why the Beatles will always be number one in my book....

That's the beauty of musical taste - it's like snowflakes |
|
No two are the same.
I just remember visiting my brother and he took us to this massive record store that I think is no longer in business (Peaches - it was in the Cleveland area). And I liked a few ELO songs on the radio and saw that the "Out of the Blue" album was $5.99 and I happened to have a $10 on me.
That was my first album ever bought and I now own over 500 vinyl and 500 CDs. Crazy thing is, I still listen to that album, side 3's 'Concerto for a Rainy Day' is probably one of the most perfect album sides ever made.

10. Peaches was a great Record Store.... |
|
They had those Peach Crates to store records in....
ELO is a great band to me... One of the highlights of my high school years...
I saw them in concert and they were out standing...
But why I think they aren't in the same league as the Beatles is their body of work doesn't stand up....
Just as I think Queen is awesome and one of the best bands to come out of the 70's...
But the same, the body of work is just not there....

I'm telling you what my personal taste in music is which just happens to find ELO music a tad better than Beatles both for the style that I love and the impact it has had on my life. BTW, Queen is #2 on the list.

They're like most bands of that era, the older stuff was amazing and the newer stuff kinda sucked. If anything, Jeff Lynn's forte really is in his current role of record producer. You listen to those old ELO albums and knew the guy had a knack for putting together a diverse collection of musicians to produce some quality sounds

I gave up on this asshat's argument when he started talking about "pretentious." Where's the greater pretention: that King Crimson's Peter Sinfield pointed out that the 21st century was likely to be a schizoid era-- totally vindicated by history, you will note-- or that a graduate of the London School of Economics has any conceivable standing to consider himself a Street Fighting Man? The Stones were no less full of shit than any other band who got out of the '60s more or less alive. (That's also why I prefer the Who: "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss"-- words to live by.)

9. I love the Beatles, but |
|
most of their early innovation was adopting American roots music for new audiences. Led Zep could be accused of that as well. The Who were probably the most original and innovative of the three bands.

12. They are all derivative of someother type of music... |
|
But the Beatles add a pop touch to the American Root music that broadened the appeal of that music far beyond what it ever was...
They worked in great harmonies, catch riffs, real good lyrics that were, for the first time, about love from a woman's perspective...

Elvis and the Beatles also got a lot of their influence from what was then called back country music which is much more dependent on traditional European folk than on African based music...

30. Because their success |
|
came as a result of racial bans on American radio. They received credit for being innovative when their main innovation was to be white enough to get played on stations that banned the people they copied. They aren't to blame for racism but their careers benefited from it. Credit should be give to the originals.

33. I think credit is being given.... |
|
But I also think that so much credit is given to the race factor as to diminish supposed non discriminated artists who were also innovating and adding to the mix...
You see if you go into examining something with preconceived notions, you come out with conclusions that support your notions going in...
African-American root music is very influential in the development of Rock-n-Roll but so is country and folk and tin pan alley music...
To say one group or another is more responsible for the rise of popular music is just an insular view that diminishes the Irish, Scottish, Jewish, or rather Yiddish and Eastern European music that combined with African rhythms to create Rock-n-Roll....

your preconceived notion is that the Beatles are the greatest.
"To say one group or another is more responsible for the rise of popular music is just an insular view that diminishes the Irish, Scottish, Jewish, or rather Yiddish and Eastern European music that combined with African rhythms to create Rock-n-Roll...."
The fact that other white people were innovative doesn't mean that the Beatles were innovative for mimicking what others did.

no body then, in your view, is at all innovative or worthy of receiving credit for anything...
And the Beatles are the greatest Pop band, by far...
And it goes beyond the music and ends up with the lyric....

Dunno if you can compare the two.
Led Zep was very very VERY good in a niche within rock
The Beatles had no boundaries. Chances are if Yoko never showed up, they would have tried their hand at a Jazz album.
