3. It's opinionated and subjective
But I think Pluto is closer to a Kuiper belt object than it is to a planet. So we have eight planets, IMO: four rocky ones close in and four gassy ones farther out.

smaller 'roids a chance to be big and call them ALL planets. Instead of 8, we'd have 12--big whoop.

7. The final decision has been made.
Gustav Holst, "The Planets" doesn't have Pluto or any of these over-grown asteroids as movements...thus 8.
