Mom and I are apparently getting a new cat today and we have two already at home. How do we introduce this new one (1 1/2 year old female, fixed) to the others (5 year old female, 13 year old male, both fixed) smoothly? And can anyone recommend a good spray that neutralizes odors a new cat brings in from outside? Someone said something here about it once...

My two older cats were not thrilled with the kitten, might kept the kitten away from the older cats and introduce them little by little.
It was not a lot fun around here for awhile, now the one older cat and the kitten are best friends.

Our cats now are relatively mellow, so I'm hoping they'll get to be friendly at some point, or at least civil :hi: Thanks!

6. It has been my experience that your new baby should be kept |
|
in another room with the door closed. Not a closet, of course, but maybe an extra bedroom. Since cats are curious by nature, they'll want to know who or what deserves that much attention that they get to be in a secret room all by themselves. So they'll start sniffing under the door, which helps them get acclimated to the newbie in the house. After a few days gradually start to introduce them. Hopefully, all goes well.

We did that (if I remember correctly) with the youngest cat and the older one... seemed to work well. Thanks! :hi:

7. Re: new introductions... |
|
When we got our second cat (our older cat being pretty hostile), we kept the new one in the cat carrier at let them get to know each other for a few hours out of the day through the bars. After a week or so, we let the new one roam, assuming the old one had at least learned to tolerate his scent. They still don't always get along, but they'll share space.
If your two are already used to each other and get along (as you told me), then this ought to be a lot easier.
As to smell, can't say, because our newer cat had a glandular problem or something that the vet had to fix. x(

Somewhat... when we're organized I'll let you know :P Gradual introduction is important... I think the new one will sleep with me tonight, door closed. We could keep her in there and let the others sniff under the door. They'll want to know WTF going on.

11. Yeah, that's what we did. |

Except we kept the new one in the spare room because I couldn't stand to be in an enclosed space with him for hours at a time, because, cute as he was (and is)...man did he reek! x( :D

he had a terrible cold, some sort of eye infection we had to put ointment on (he hated that), and some horribly decayed teeth that made his breath smell and had to be pulled. It was like...you're gorgeous, but don't come near me. :D

19. wait until your two cats are sitting or laying together |
|
then drop the new cat on top of them.
Watch the ensuing antics.

21. I tried rubbing a towel along the new animal and giving to the old |
|
animals and vice versa to let them get the scent of each other without a direct confrontation. It seemed to go well, even with the dogs.
