On how many occasions have you found yourself wearing a ballgown?
I once asked my male then-boss about appropriate dress for a function I was attending in NY, and his response was: "Well, I don't think you'll need to wear a ballgown...."

11. If you count the dress I wore to my senior prom, then once.
It was by no means a fancy ball gown---it was mid-calf and blue with a matching wrap.

I can't believe your boss said that to you! Like you have a closet full of ballgowns just waiting for the right occasion....

18. I was in a sorority all through college.
So, quite a few times. I still have one of them, it's a tea-length one and it's very pretty. I'm quite sure I could never fit into it, but I'm still keeping it for old time's sake.

20. How are we defining ballgown?
I often wear long, full, ball gown type skirts with corsets or other fancy tops to parties. I like to dress up. But I rarely have occasion to wear a one piece full ball gown, in disney princess fashion

25. A couple dozen times
Let's see, the prom - five or six times (my school for 10th-12th grades, my dates schools), numerous other formal functions over the years, my wedding (I didn't wear a wedding dress). I own about 8 long gowns right now in fact! I have a gorgeous long black velvet gown with a train that I bought to wear to John Kerry's inauguration. OK, well that was my excuse for buying it. Sadly, I haven't gotten to wear that one yet.

30. I'm not even sure what the definition of "ballgown" is anymore
But I used to belong to a Hunt (as in foxhunt and, no - we didn't kill foxes. We just hunted a scent) and we had a formal, black-tie event every year so I wore a (different) gown to each of those. Whether or not they'd be referred to as a ballgown I don't know.

32. that was my question too
I used to work on a lot of charity black tie events, but I wore evening gowns most often. I think I only have one that could qualify as a "ball gown," a brocade dress with full skirt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_gown

If they were floor-length or tea-length then they probably qualified as ball gowns

37. I went to a very formal wedding almost two years ago...
My dress was a long pink and white gingham check silk taffeta ball skirt with an apple green underskirt, and a silk knit top. Very plain, but with some crocheted edging and a few dangles hanging at the waist.

I felt very elegant.

:)

39. Old-fashioned term
I think people say just gown or full-length dress. I can't remember the last time I heard "ballgown."
I've worn gowns twice,at a high school prom and a fancy charity event.

44. technically, a ball gown is the really full skirt, much like is currentl
Edited on Fri Aug-25-06 09:49 PM by yellowdogintexas
in fashion for a wedding gown.

the more generic term formal is a long dress made of the dressier fabrics, like satin, silk, taffeta, velvet, brocade, etc.

However I once had a formal made of linen, with an embroidered batiste bodice and it was really pretty. The next year it was too big for me and my mom took the skirt off and made a sleeveless dress with matching jacket from it.

I went to 3 proms, two formals in college and was in one formal wedding, plus I had a very formal wedding gown for one of my weddings.

OH yeah, I was a flower girl in a wedding and we had a piano recital every year, and those required long dresses. I had a new one every year, all made by my mom.
