Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 01:59 AM by mad-mommy
I took care of my mom every single day when she was ill. My second mom, a dear friend, also has cancer. I go to see her every week. She's doing very well for now, which is a great thing. And my family adopted her son since he's an only child. Just met him last week, he lives out of state.

2. My dear MoseyWalker........
What have I done for someone else?

Well.......one very dear friend told me a few months ago that last year I had helped him recover his self-esteem...

I'd had no idea that I'd done this.........and it was a considerable boost to my own...

How's that?

BTW.......I thought you were going to bed? What happened?

6. I couldn't stop
I also need a rise in self esteem. I have worked and felt I was the best only to be shot down recently by someone who I didn't realize was also shooting down my confidence.

Who can sleep in interesting times?

3. I bought a beer for a guy the other day
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 02:05 AM by libnnc
Total stranger.

He was sitting beside me at a little campus bar I frequent. It was "$2 What's in the Beer Tub?" Tuesday (bartender sticks his arm in the tub and whatever he pulls out, you get for 2 bucks) He was out of money and I offered to buy him a tub beer. We had a very nice conversation. Sweet guy.

I also over tip when I go out. I work in a bar partime and I like to practice "tip karma".

Edit to add:
I also helped my professor friend move into her new office. Unboxed all her stuff for her and set up her shelves. Gave us some quality time to spend together and she bought me lunch. :D

move. And she was only moving across the hall! :D

It was the last day of school, and we didn't want to go back to our homerooms, so like ten of us stayed and helped the teacher pack up books and things. 'Twas fun, and then some other teachers recruited us as well.

:)

17. I taught my SO's daughter to read
Neither he nor his ex-wife had the patience and her twin was getting miles ahead of her. So I concocted a 'reading club' that met every Tuesday; she and her twin earned money for reading books out loud to me -- we saved the money to buy American Girl dolls.

After reading we baked, played games, or did art projects that all involved reading only the little girl didn't realize she was reading. She'd convinced herself that reading was hard and she was afraid of it.

Now we can't get her nose out of a book. I created a monster but...I'm very proud. I can't imagine life without reading.

18. I found a wallet on the street
while out walking. I found the owner's license in the wallet and just walked to his home and returned it to him. It was a teenager who had his mom's credit card and a lot of cash. He was SOOO happy. I felt really good about it, not only did I make someone happy, but I added 3 miles onto my usual walk and got more exercise it. :D

19. I have helped lots of people get their education.
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 11:28 AM by NewWaveChick1981
:) I worked in student financial aid for 20 years prior to switching jobs back in October 2005. I was a sounding board for many, many students, and they came to me for advice about lots of things, not just about student aid. I was a director of financial aid the last seven years. I found creative solutions for students and pushed the envelope many times, bending rules as far as they could possibly go without violating them and going out on some shaky limbs from time to time. I became a detective and a mentor, and I never met a student I didn't have time for. :) A good many of them thanked me in person, and many wrote thank you notes, but there were a few very special students who sent personal messages to the college president thanking them for having me there.

That's not why I worked in the profession I chose---I wanted to make a difference for students, as corny as that sounds. I made a big difference in the lives of thousands of students over those 20 years, and most of them don't even know it. :D I didn't do it for the thank-yous---I did it because it was the right thing to do. The thank-yous were just icing on the cake. :)

And hey, an international student from China even brought me a thank-you gift for helping her, and it has become famous in the Lounge as the FReeper Flashing Robe...

24. I am sometimes looked down upon/attacked because I do not donate to
charities/causes. However I do help people. In the past few years I have.
Given away 2 cars to needy people who had no transportation
Paid to have a body returned to her home country for burial
Gave away a couple of old but still servicable computers

This is what charity should be, helping others without looking for a tax deduction,
or without 20% being taken off the top for directord salary and other overhead.
