Just not the ear canal. Use them only to clean the outer part of the ear.
They're also good (according to the package) for makeup, baby care, first aid, etc.

shoved one into my ear...UGH! Pain and blood dripping from my ear, which oddly enough, is what I'm getting right now watching an old SNL with Joe Piscopo.
