Unfortunately, my Kohaku named 'Madonna' (the red/white one) died this year.

I just found this one going through old files. It's pretty hard to get a decent pic/video of them, since they are mostly ignoring my directing advice. :) In this one I also think they were expecting me to feed them ...

...they are beautiful. I'm sorry to here about Madonna. What is the usual life-span of a Kois?

5. They can get very, very old.

Kois who've had good care can live 50 to 70 years, and there are some reports of kois having lived as long as 200 years. Madonna was only about four years old. We got her when she was about four inches long, and she was about 15 inches long when she died. :(

8. Hard to say, since there was no autopsy.

She had somewhat of a tumor on her left eye, but she had this for a few years. She died rather quickly, and when I got her out, she had no injuries at all.

Ever have any problems with hungry birds?

and there's no problem with hungry birds, since the pond is too close to the house.
