What cool collectible do you have at home?
I'm watching the Antique Roadshow and even though I don't have anything worth what some of these people have, I started thinking about what I do have that I really dig. Not that is has to be worth a lot, just something or things you have that you "treasure".

I have:

A rock from the Temple of Zeus
A book about Edgar Allan Poe from the 1890's
A guitar pick John Lennon used at Madison Square Garden (supposedly)
Some Elvis hair given to me by a friend of his for my birthday...LOL It was a sweet gesture.

So, what ya got? Collectible or just kind of cool.

1. An antique Royal Sarouk oriental rug.
It's quite large, but has some condition problems. Yes, I also watch Antiques Roadshow. Best thing on the tube.

2. It's a cool show
My favorite was the woman who had football cards still in the package from decades ago. The guy said they are worth around $1,000 each and some a little more. He asked her how many she had and she said 350 packs..lol. Yikes!

5. I have some family
heirloom type stuff. I have my paternal grandmother's engagement and wedding rings, and the little jewelry box she kept them in.

An antique tea set thing that I could probably make some decent money from on eBay.

My maternal grandmother's silver serving tray.

A 1943 steel penny that's in decent shape.

And some other stuff I can't think of right now.

8. I am the proud momma of a genuine Squier Venus
Courtney Love designed guitar. I can't seem to get a good picture of mine no matter how hard I try, but here is a link to a picture of one that resembles mine.

and some info about the guitar, which also came in an awful ugly seafoam green. Mine is black. I love it.
http://www.heavenlyrain.com/cr/musician/venus.html

The only changes I made to mine are black pickup covers and I changed the knobs to black dome knobs.

26. I couldn't either, but I still managed to get a generic crayon box
with a sharpener in it. The paper on the crayons didn't fit right and constantly slipped and the coloring was hard because the crayons were so cheap. I'll never forget that. I am not great at distinguishing subtle shades of blue/green either.

I can see you with your dual-sharpened crayons just coloring away. Makes me feel stupid, cause I never thought of that, lol. I just liked to break the crayons and look at the inside. See the textures and patterns in the break, whether it was smooth or notchy. I was a weird kid.

65. Similarly, I have a 1937 IBM electric typewriter
From, I think, the second year they were made. My grandpa Bill was a salesman for the International Business Machines Company (I have a couple of his business cards -- pretty cool). Grandma got the machine as a demonstrator and it was about the only thing I really, really wanted from her estate. It still works fine, except for the back space key which I'll get repaired someday.
As far as collecting stuff, I have a whole closet of high school "jock jackets" from around the country -- say fifty or so. They are warm, keep you very dry when it snows or rains, come in any number of color combination and are classically American. I have at least one in every letter except I, K, Q and Z as well as several with letter combinations ("A/H" for my old high school, (Saginaw MI) Arthur Hill, for example).
John
How you doing, arwalden? Every going good there in Hampton? I hear they're shutting down Fort Monroe (my old Army post) soon.

I also have my grandmother's prewar Japanese wedding china, oil paintings done by my great-grandmother, and a writing desk my mother got as a child that dates to 1750. 41. A bunch of Warhammer figurines... comic books, too
I have had several Warhammer figures painted for me by award-winning miniature painters like Jennifer Haley & Matt Verzani (as well as a very good painter on DU as well) I had some painted on commission, and some I got off of eBay. Warhammer is a fantasy wargame featuring things like orcs, elves, goblins, undead, etc. The figures are about 1" high each, though there are exceptions for monsters, dragons, etc.

I have a lot of comic books from the 60s and 70s, including a ton of Spider-Man.

54. I've got a bunch of antiques
But some of the coolest stuff I have came from the South Pacific and Africa. My dad was the first mate on a tall sailing ship in 1955 when he was 18, and they around the coast of Africa and stopped at a bunch of islands in the South Pacific. This was back before anyone went to these places for vacation, and they were mainly populated by indigenous peoples. There was a book written about the voyage and National Geographic did a special on the ship, called The Yankee.

My dad brought back tons of artefact's that he traded the locals for along the way. We've got knives and other weapons, statues, carvings, textiles.

I have my g-g-grandmothers wedding ring (she got married at 16 and died at 92, and never once took it off until she got sick and wanted it to go to family), it is TINY and so thin from wear that I'm surprised she didn't slice herself on it when she waas older (she was a farmers wife, LOTS of hard work). I also have several hundred old family photos ranging from over 110 years old to 50 years old.

Everything else I own is crap and I don't care. Those are my most treasured possesions.

67. April 1951 Edition of "Galaxy"
That's where CM Kornbluth's "Marching Morons" was first published. I have a lot of Golden Era science fiction and Kornbluth, including novels written under his many pen-names. I recently got the first American edition (1905) of GD Shaw's Candida for next to nothing. I have an odd assortment of various first editions that mean a lot to me.

I have a 1949 Maxfield Parrish lithograph ("The Village Church) in an advertising calendar from Acme Pattern Works.

I have a large collection of glass, including a 100+ piece set of depression Fireking Marigold dinnerware (including serving pieces), art glass by various artists, such as Vernon Brejcha, Michael Shearer, Peter Schiller, etc and a lot of cobalt depression glass. I also have some modern non-art glass that I ust thought was cool; after all, a lot of depression glass was given away at gas stations; perhaps someday some this will be collectible!

My collection began years ago when I received one that belonged to my grandmother. It's from the 1880's. I don't collect because of value, I do it because I like them.

82. A 101-year-old rifle embossed with the crest of Czar Nicholas II
Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 02:07 PM by benEzra
...a model 1891 Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle (7.62x54mm) made in Izhevsk, Russia for the Imperial Russian army in 1905. It could have seen some action in World War I. The rifle was apparently in Finland when the Finns broke away from Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution, was issued to the Finnish Army, likely saw a great deal of action during the Winter War 1939-1940, was rebarreled and upgraded to M39 status in 1942 at the Finnish VKT arsenal in Jyvaskyla, and likely saw additional action against both the Soviets and the Nazi before the war was over. Sometime during the war, an artistic Finnish soldier delicately carved the initials "E.T." into the rear sight base, where they wouldn't easily be seen. Sometime after the war, the rifle was placed into storage as part of the Finnish Army's reserve.

During the mid-1990's, Finland allowed many of its older bolt-action rifles to be sold to collectors in other nations. This particulary M39 was imported into the U.S. by a company in Vermont, and ended up at a gun shop in Florida that caters to history buffs, which is how I came to purchase it.

The rifle turned 100 years old last year, and can still shoot the center out of a playing card at 100 yards. Taken care of, with light use, it should still be functional a thousand years from now. It's not worth a lot from a financial standpoint (maybe $200), but it's a textbook of Russian and Finnish history, and played a part in some of the most important historical events of the twentieth century.
