Tiger Woods, y'all.
For those who don't know or wouldn't otherwise care, it's worth noting that the man is making history as we live. They don't call the best in the game "Masters" for no reason.

For those who know and follow the game...wow. Just wow.

Eight years later, when they were both playing in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, Elliott couldn't help himself.

"You know, after I played with you in '96, if I had fallen asleep and woke up to see you'd won 40 tournaments, I wouldn't have believed it," he told Woods.

"I wouldn't have, either," said Woods.

Elliott believes it now.

"He's going to win 125 tournaments and probably 30 majors before he's done," said Elliott, who, like Hart, has bounced between the Tour and the Nationwide circuit. Hart and Elliott have a combined zero Tour victories compared to Woods' 52. But for two days in 1996 they were part of Tiger Mania in its infancy.

"It's neat to be able to say I did it, especially for his first round as a pro," said Hart. "But none of us could have predicted he'd do this."

1. I agree...it is truly remarkable
I had my five month old on my lap watching the last day of the PGA Championship last week, and I said to her (she was saying blllruaaah, blllruaaah) that she was going to tell people one day: "I saw Tiger Woods play. My Dad and I used to watch Tiger Woods play." He is - and will be - that great.

I want him to win every tournament, and, incredibly, he seems intent on obliging me! And what a class act, too.

I loved the Sports Center guys describing the Bridgestone playoff. Tiger won on the hole just after it started pouring, so the SC guys say "Cats don't like water, so Tiger had to end it here...." Love it.

10. Just saw that
"Cats...hate...water...so let me stuff this and we'll all go inside."

Oof. Three feet from the hole in the pouring rain. Sick.

2. A friend of mine is the PGA MidAtlantic President and has been
raving about Tiger for years. Admittedly, I don't follow the game, nor am I any good at it, but an athlete of his caliber doesn't come along every day.

15. See post #14
Tiger also had the gallery turn over a rock (moveable temp object) that helped him win a tournament. Also it is pretty clear to me that in the PGA playoff with Bob May that kid grabbed Tiger's ball and threw it back out of the drain.

I love Tiger too but he has gotten a few breaks and takes FULL advantage of the rules from time to time.

What ever happened to Taylor Smith?

12. absolutely, the best of all time
You KNOW he wants to beat Jack's record...and he will, at a much younger age too. He is amazing. I heard that after Saturday's round, he said something to the effect that his body was helping him lose the tournament, but his mind would help him win the tournament..and he was right. His focus and ability to figure out how to recover from a bad shot is beyond anything I've ever seen.
Just amazing.

8. The only real comparison is Babe Ruth...
...both men reinvented what their sports were about, and both men lapped the field so often that it became/becomes almost monotonous...no one else is in their class...

14. Tiger's FIRST WIN & Taylor Smith - the 1996 Disney/Oldmobile Classic
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 10:23 AM by underpants
You will CRUSH with this trivia question at the local bar or drinking establishment.

Taylor Smith, 1996 Walt Disney World/ Oldsmobile Classic. Smith was disqualified during the final round for using a putter with an illegal grip. He played the final nine while appealing the decision, and his score would have put him in a playoff with Tiger Woods.

16. Whenever anybody mentions him, I think of Chris Rock
The world is upside down! The world's best rapper is white, the world's best golfer is black, the tallest player in the NBA is Chinese, the French think we're arrogant, and the Germans don't want to go to war!

17. Tiger is the finest example of what you get when you REALLY
apply yourself. I've heard it said that there are other golfers with more raw talent but that Tiger's work ethic, incredible mental power and sheer intimidation make him the greatest........
