Dude, where the fuck is Pandora coming from?
SMB's "Jet Airliner" does NOT bear relation to Steely Dan.

:wtf:

:eyes:

1. so you just got me to check out Pandora for the first time
So far they're right on.

But damn...they just played a song by someone I knew who I lost to depression 5 years ago. It's actually kind of painful to hear her.

2. I love Pandora.
Really. :D

Fact is, it's hard to find ANYTHING that bears relation to Steely Dan, so they do pretty well, all things considered. ;)

I just listen for the 'Dan songs, really.

Like "Aja," which is on now. Man, I love this song, and this album. *turns up speakers*

Is Peter Holsapple still married to Susan Cowsill? They were both working at the Borders in Metairie for awhile there.

10. You noticed that..
... I tried it out for a while, always looking for new music - but frankly I think the old "persons who like X have a high correllation to liking Y" works a lot better than the fancy-pants algorithm Pandora uses - they try to describe music with words and by keys and other criteria and that doesn't work.

13. Well, Steely Dan is hard to classify as it as.
Add to this my sometimes-capricious musical tastes and poor Pandora does well to keep up with me as it does! It HAS played some great Elvis Costello!

;)

16. I agree..
.... most good music is hard to classify. It is not whether it is major key or minor key or anything like that, it has to do with creativity and passion and honesty.

Over the years I've found more great music from friends/internets-friends who like the stuff I like and also like something I haven't yet heard. But even that is certainly not fool-proof :)

11. Steely Dan and Steve Miller....
jammed a lot and I think Steve Miller may have even played on some of the early Steely Dan records....

Steely Dan and the Dobbie Brothers also shared a lot of people back and forth...

They are all from the same area and they are all blues based....

12. I suppose that's true.
I just feel oddly insulted, especially since, of all the SMB songs, "Jet Airliner" has got to be one of the dumbest. How dare this machine presume I might like it?

:grr:

:D

17. Pandora is insane.
I tell it 'play some techno.'
It replies 'here's some new age yoga crap.'
I'm like 'No dammit! Play some techno!'
And then it's like 'well, how about this lovely song?'
I go 'Arg! That's the same freaking artist! Whats wrong with you? Play some techno!'
And Pandoras like 'well, what about this? It has wind chimes!'

And then I turn off pandora.
