Remember several years ago when research showed that only a small per centage of the population dreams in color? Did you notice how many people started claiming that THEY were among the lucky few? Seemed like nobody would admit they DIDN'T dream in color.
To be honest, I doubt I dream in color. But it's hard to say.
So, are you one of those few? (keep in mind, I'll doubt you if you claim you are )

sometimes it is the most memorable part of the dream. For instance, I dreamt recently that friends had opened a hotel. The color scheme of the guest rooms was peach and butter yellow and pale apple green. It was very beautiful. Even though the beds were part of the floor and had no soft mattress of any kind. And there was a game room. I played a game that involved pushing cooked red potatoes through holes- kind of like skee ball. The potatoes were definitely red. :-)

Often in very vivid color. I really can't provide examples of any recent dreams (if you want this thread to stay unlocked, that is ), but I have had dreams that involved very orange coral reefs, blue oceans, green grass, etc. Color is usually a pretty important part of my dreams.

but it's difficult to say. I mean, I might see a bright green field in my dreams, but it could really be a black-and-white field with my brain telling me it's green because I know that's what color it's supposed to be.
So, I think I dream in color, but I can't say for certain. Dreams are weird.

5. Always in color.. And, when you think about it.. why would anyone |
|
dream in black and white? The very concept of black and white imagery didn't exist until the invention of photography (mid 1800s). I've read that in the earliest years of photographic portraiture, some people wanted to wait until a color process was perfected- many assumed the 'colorless' process was just an early techical obstacle that would soon be overcome. Until then, how many paintings were done in color (answer: all of them)? Only woodcuts, stamped images, and printed illustrations appeared in mono-color (and many of the those were colored-in by hand).

6. Yes, but the real question then becomes... |
|
"Do I really dream in color, or just IMAGINE that I dream in color"?
One of my dreams last night definitely had SOME color, but only where COLOR was necessary to the plot. A blinking light on a security door was RED, then turned GREEN before it opened. But most of the dream was probably B&W. Traffic lights showed red/yellow/green, but I couldn't tell you whether the BODY of the light was really yellow or not.

Seeing anything in Black and White is rather jarring. I imagine that if I was dreaming in black and white I'd remember that.

Sometimes, the darker ones (themes of harm or danger or intense sadness or anger) tend to be black and white. (Kinda like film noir! :-) )
The happier and silly ones tend to be in color.

"monochrome" is a better word. I've had dreams that appeared distincly, blue or kinda sepia toned. Not really b/w per say, but just like a TV with the color muted. Sorta.

but I still think your baseline dream is going to use color pretty liberally. If you dream you're in your kitchen, wouldn't you expect the dream to have the same colors as the real world kitchen?

I rarely remember details of my dreams; more a sensation or an impression, and even then it's usually fleeting. I'll have an echo...something...for a while but then even that fades.
Sometimes I wish I could remember more, though. Seems the only time I DO vividly remember them, they're about box scores.

If color is essential to the dream, then yes. I can definitely remember times when the color of something was one of the only things I remembered about the dream. Other times I'm not sure if they're in color or not...it could be that because color wasn't part of the "storyline" I just didn't bother to remember.

And I know, from specific details -- and as much as it's possible to know when it's all, after all, in our minds -- that it's not some post-dream retroactive colorization. When I've talked about dreams with people it's been apparent that some claim not to 'see' colors whereas many do. I'm not sure I'd believe that most people dream in monochromatic tones, or even that anyone does so consistently.
My dreams tend to be very vivid, and so is the color palette. Been that way my whole life, long before the conclusion of this research that I have never heard of before...

39. One study suggests B&W tv influenced B&W dreams, and they are fading: |
|
Do We Dream in Color? Cultural Variations and Skepticism Eric Schwitzgebel, Changbing Huang, and Yifeng Zhou
Dreaming, 16 (2006), 36-42.
Abstract
In the United States, the rise and fall of the opinion that we dream in black and white coincided with the rise and fall of black and white film media over the course of the twentieth century, suggesting that our opinions about the coloration of our dreams are hostage to cultural influences. This study generalizes that conclusion cross-culturally. Three groups of Chinese respondents, similar in age but differing in history of colored media exposure, were given questionnaires replicating those of Middleton (1942) and Schwitzgebel (2003). As expected, the groups with longer histories of colored media exposure reported the most colored dreaming.

41. Yes, most definitely. I also can dream physical sensations and smells. |
|
For instance, I once had a dream where it was raining on me, and the rain hurt my skin intensely in the dream. There was no actual water falling on me in real life. I also encountered a vivid perfume smell at my grandmother's one day, and that night in my dream somebody was wearing that scent, which my mind remembered, as it was so vivid.
Weird.
