Good fortune (Bruce Cockburn)
Tonight I was leafleting the Bruce Cockburn concert in lexington Ky today. I was passing out leaflets for a water initiative. A lot of good souls go to Bruce Cockburn concerts.

I saw a lot of old friends, and met some new friends.

But the good fortune came as a complete surprise. One of the promoters came out and offered me a free ticket to the show. He said he appreciated my activism.

The concert was terrific. I really liked his keyboard player. She has real class. Every now and then I heard some of the percussive style of Terry Adams, but then she could lay down some sweet subtle jazz licks.

His drummer was damn good too.

1. Bruce Cockburn played in Kentucky???
:wow:

I didn't think there'd be a market for his music there!

Glad you got to see the show!

2. he's been here before. Johnny Lang will be here
in a few weeks.

One of the Merry Pranksters lives here and every now and then some of the others pass through. the well known pot activist Gatewood Galbraith lives here, Jim Varney was raised here. Barbara Kingsolver was born and raised just north of here. Jazz great Les McCann is from here. Ray Charles came to Lexington to detox.

Lexington was also one of the pioneers in educational tv. KET was bouncing tv signals off an airplane so the signal could reach schools outside the line of sight range of TV transmitters. I work with Len Press the visionary behind this advance. He's one of the leaders of the initiative I was promoting. He was my first employer when I moved here.*

We have a vibrant arts scene and a lot of political activist. Our mayor is a single mother politically left of center, and is of Arab descent.

*At that time all I had was what I could carry on my bicycle. I was living in a pup tent next to a stream. I would cycle 16 miles into work each day until I had enough money to rent a house.

3. Thank you for setting me straight
on this. I would never have guessed there was such activism.

Since I'm a horse racing fan, to me Lexington is breeding farms, yearling sales, Keeneland - and where there's lots of money, usually conservatism. (also knowing a couple of rabid fundies from there contributed to my view)

It's a place I've always wanted to visit - even moreso now! :hi:

5. Keeneland is a beautiful place. They are in the final
stages of resurfacing the track for the fall meet. If you saw any of the graphics from the Sunday plane crash you saw an aerial view of Keeneland.

Also when the Bin Ladens and other Saudis were being evacuated after 9-11, they picked up a few here in Lexington.

9. I haven't been to Keeneland
though I've seen it many times. One of my favourite races of the year is the Shadwell Mile there.

Anyone can watch the meet (or replays, or the sales when they're on) at: http://www.keeneland.com/

Unbelievable to watch the sales. Seeing a few million go down at the drop of a hat...imagine having that sort of money to burn on an unraced yearling.

10. My sister used to work the sales. She said it is nothing more
than rich people screwing other rich people.

My wife used to be an entertainer at some of the big derby parties for the rich horsey set. She says they are a bunch of drunks, druggies and perverts.

11. Doesn't surprise me
let's face it - you can't get as rich by screwing poor people. ;-)

The latter statement doesn't surprise me, either. I don't have a particular admiration for the rich owners, only the horses. :-) (the people involved with taking care of the horses - I have the utmost respect for)

12. She is in the business because of the horses. She
left a good paying job at Toyota to go back into the horse business. She now works for a very prestigious Equine Veterinarian as a shift supervisor.

since '71 or so. good fortune indeed.

i went to see a band last weekend whose keyboard player also had a glimmer of Terry Adams. your mention of him prompted me to post and shout out to the "Q" fans.

7. I went to high school with Terry. He was a wild man
even then. He's the one that got me interested in jazz.

8. Been a fan of Terry since the early 60's when we
both went to Butler High School. He was a few years younger than me. His older brother Donn, was a good guy too.

13. Cockburn played on Austin City Limits in the eighties. He did....

an extended 12 string version of Rocket Launcher.

The camera cut to the audience. The heads were
shakin' and the jaws were droppin' It's like he
dropped in from Mars.

15. My sister lives in Lexington, and I was just there in July.
Nice city, even thought my city has a large Univ. in it. it does not have that "college" feel to it. Lexington does.
