2. Yes, it is a wonderful place. This is our fourth visit since we moved
from Boston, Massachusetts to Portland, Oregon. The first time, we crossed over from Port Angeles, WA, a short ferry ride. But by far the best connection is from Anacortes, WA, which takes a couple of hours, but you get to see the San Juan islands. Some of those views are exceptional. I tend to get motion sick, so I took 1 chewable tablet of Bonine and had a small lunch, a little reading, followed by a very nice nap!

19. You're from Victoria -- or Seattle?
Still living in Seattle? That's what your profile says...

If so, your library is magnificent. I'm so jealous...

5. I'm sitting in Victoria right now!
It's sunny, 20 degrees C, and I'll bet if I go down to Government Street tonight (the Fringe Festival is on this week!) it will look just like your lovely pics!

6. Say "hello" to all the beautiful painted bears for me!
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 04:55 PM by Radio_Lady
If you want to see them, go to the original link -- we have many other photos:

From: www.spiritbearsinthecity.com

The Spirit Bear was chosen to embody the West Coast and to highlight that the Pacific Coast of British Columbia is the only place in the world to view the Spirit Bear. The Spirit Bear exhibit will be on display from May through to October 2006.

To introduce the exhibit we will be holding exciting kick-off events in 2005 and 2006 in participating cities, where the finished Spirit Bears will be presented to the media, the public, invited guests and public officials.

The exhibit will end with the great 'Spirit Bear Auction', a gala event where the Spirit Bears will be put on the block and auctioned to the highest bidder. A select number of Spirit Bears will be auctioned live while the remaining bears will be auctioned online. Spirit Bear auction proceeds will benefit the BC Lions Society's Easter Seal Operations and the Canucks for Kids Fund.

8. I don't think so -- at least, not that I recall. What year was that?
Wow! Some people have such original ideas! Those are beautiful -- thanks for sharing.

10. a couple of years ago -- 2003, 2004?
I especially liked the one in the pic I linked to, because it looked like a window into another world! The artist painted it with underwater distortions and everything.

The bear with the colored pebbles stuck all over it is on Fort, outside my favorite bookstore -- I'm always tempted to touch it (especially when the sun is shining and it looks all sparkly in the light).

9. Those are wonderful photos, RadioLady.
I lived in Washington State for five years in the late 50's-early 60's.

I made many visits to Victoria and Vancouver,BC.
My last visit there was in June 2002.

The San Juan Islands are beautiful.

Thanks for much for sharing these.

OT: Is your avatar Van Gogh's "A Starry Night"? I'm trying to figure it out, but it's pretty small...

13. Thanks for Sharing, Radio Lady
I was fortunate to spend a month back in '98, landed in Vancouver, drove down to visit a friend in Seattle. Stayed in Port Townsend, then went to Port Angeles to catch the ferry to Victoria. Such a beautiful city. I felt like a was finally home!
We went and stayed at Salt Spring Island for a day/night at the Daffodil Cove, cute cottage that had access to the water, you have to hike down the path to get there, but it was worth it. Got to see a harbor seal, and starfishes in a variety of colors. Then headed up north on Vancouver Island. Stayed a day/night at Quadra Island. Denman Island another day/night. Gabriola Island has wonderful petroglyphs (sp), met a nice man while waiting for the ferry. We had some things in common and he was a charming man.
Spent more time in Victoria. Went to see a Da Vinci exhibit, that was so cool and what a lesson in history.

I hope you can get the chance to check out some of the Islands off of the Vancouver Island. The people there are extremely nice and helpful in giving advice on what to see.

Maybe next year?

18. Last year, we drove to Nanaimo. Unfortunately it was 86 degrees F.
and I was melting... We went to an art fair, and then tried to get to the accordion festival in the park, but I ended up being just too hot to handle. We also drove to Sooke.

It was much hotter last August than this August (at least on the weekend we chose).

I'll have to look at a map to find Courtenay.

Thanks for your post. We'll be back, I'm sure.

20. Courtenay's an hour north of Nanaimo.
An hour and a half if you take the seaside route (recommended!).

Until next year, Radio_Lady! :hi:

It was almost like being there! You've inspired me to take more photos, when I go on vacation next time, instead of just the scenery. Though, your sunset photos were my favorite, of course! :hi:
