I just read a report somewhere this morning that sushi has really high levels of mercury in it - way higher than is safe.
Apparently its the "tuna" sushi that is so bad.
I'm crushed. I love sushi and I don't want to be afraid to eat it. I guess I can just stay away from the tuna kind.

I don't care about the mercury levels. I live in NJ, smoke and drink. A little mercury isn't going to hurt me. I'm not scared enough to have it affect my eating habits and I don't want kids, plus I eat everything else pretty much organic.

3. What kind of sushi can you get there. |
|
The only stuff I have found in KC is at HYVEE and it's OK - but I think fresh sushi from a sushi bar would probably be better.

There's a bunch of sushi bars around where I live. And I'm only about 35 minutes from NYC, which is like sushi heaven. Hell, at Avenue A Sushi, I can get amazing sushi and sake at 3am.
I won't eat the supermarket stuff, but I eat the raw stuff, which I definitely wouldn't trust from a supermarket (which I guess a HYVEE is, we don't have those here).
On edit: I wouldn't trust raw fish in the midwest either.

there is very good sushi in Denver. (I'm a born and bred New Yorker who is used to Yasuda and Gari and so on in Manhattan, so I think I have decent taste.)
Apparently, the planes coming from Japan that fly to NY every day with fresh fish stop to refuel in Denver and they leave off a little bit of the fish there.

I love Sushi! I have it at least 1-2 times a week and I go hard-core - the Sashimi (raw fish only)

11. Rockaway, about 35 minutes west of NYC. |

I eat it about 1-2 times a week too. I usually get one of the big rolls and then some sashimi. One of my favorite rolls is spicy tuna & avocado with salmon & tobiko wrapped around the outside.

Tuna is actually my second choice after salmon but I've heard it has high mercury levels as well.

I spent years in the orient and never acquired the taste. It is too much like eating right out the bait bucket to me.

Kinda. The Unification Church set up sushi restuarant supply companies in the 70s and the majority of sushi in many cities are supplied by them.

There's a few twists in Brazilian sushi that just couldn't have come out of a Japanese mind. Mmmmmmm... deep fried Philadelphia rolls...

Oh, oh, oh, what a snack!
Tasty, but only if fresh and well-prepared. I'm not a snob about it; my local grocery store sells a nice product, but if it's started to "turn," then it's yucky beyond yuck.

:-)
It just tastes better there, for some reason, especially if you go to the sushi counter (not the place where they sell pre-packed sushi and sashimi, the snack bar where the employees serve up fresh slices of your favorite sea creatures) in the fish department of a department store food section.
