1. my personal favorite is when I answer the phone at work... |
|
and someone starts into what kind of problem they are having and they don't even bother to say...
"Hello...my name is Sue and I would like to ask a question..."
I work with professionals who consistently call me on the phone and start off with...
"this code isn't working and I need to know why xxx and www can't be done in this type of coding scenario..."

Say hello and identify yourself, first.

5. We have caller ID and so we know who is calling when the phone rings |
|
but I still answer the phone and say hello. My husband just picks up the phone and starts talking to the person. That would freak me out. :scared:

19. I'm really careful not to do that... |
|
We use our caller ID to screen callers (and a lot of people who get screened would be shocked to know it!), so I really don't want anyone to get a hint that we know who's calling...

I get that one at work occasionally. I usually just say, "This is the front desk." What I *want* to say is, "Who the hell is THIS?"

when I answer the phone.
It's incredibly rude on the caller's part.

20. I used to get that a lot at work |
|
"Who am I speaking to?"
I'd stifle the urges to correct their grammar and to say "Did you call to ask me that?" I could understand why they asked, because the vast majority of people who call a newspaper have no idea whom to speak with; they just want to bitch about something, and the front desk connects them to whichever editor's available.
So I'd tell them my name and that I was the city editor. Once in awhile they'd say, "No, I want to speak to the editor," when, unbeknownst to them, I was more likely the right person to handle their gripe.
But they never, ever, gave their name. They're just "a reader" or "a subscriber." I told them my name, and it's in the paper and on the web site. But they get to be anonymous.
