I'm not good enough, cause I'm not christian
So, my GF is a "Christian" I use quotes because she's more spiritual than religious and goes to church cause that's where they talk about god and she likes the community and charity stuff.
My being a heathen hasn't been a problem with us.
But a friend of hers just got back from a few months away. And My GF said when she was telling the girl about me, the girl said in a snotty tone, "I assume he's christian."
And when she told her I wasn't, she proceeded to give my girlfriend a lecture about dating non-christians.
My girl acted like it was no big deal and that it's something we'll have to get used to. I didn't act too pissed about it. But I was really thinking, "Who's this fucking C*NT of a friend I've never met that is judging me because I don't share her religious beliefs?"
It really pisses me off. I'm a damn good guy and this cow lectures my girlfriend cause she's dating me?
SHE'S NEVER EVEN MET ME!!!
If I ever meet her it's gonna be hard not to get all Irish on her.
DU Christians... I know you're not all like that.. but seriously... WHAT THE FUCK?!
What happened to the whole love thy neighbour stuff?

1. many christians consider it ungodly or unworldly to associate
with non christians. you can't fellowship with an unsaved person.

2. Oh, I've heard worse.
Like when the pastor's wife says of another church member "that person isn't a REAL Christian." In a church staff meeting. :banghead:

So, what was the GF's reaction? How did she respond?

6. She grins and bears it
And that doesn't bug me. I don't need her to defend me or our relationship.
But if that fucking woman ever says anything to me she better be prepared for something completely different.

Oh yeah! Best part, her friend is a teacher. Nice to know PSYCHOPATHS are teaching our youth.

12. perhaps she's concerned about the afterlife....
and wants to make sure you're in heaven?

It's a pity people still think that way. But what makes it worse is when they feel the need to share their ignorance with everyone else.

Sounds like you've got a great gf!

3. ick.
I can just hear the tone in her voice, too. :scared:

did she throw a bible at your girlfriend and tell her she was filled with the spirt of the Lord?

Seriously, Jesus wasn't a Christian, so what's the big deal?

4. "Get all Irish on her".....

Watch out, the fundy friend may take that as you want to throw a bomb at her. Be yourself, your girlfriend seems to not care that you are a heathen. As long as she is not overly influenced by the fundy friend's opinion, nothing to worry about. Just laugh at the fundy friend, she deserves it.

5. it sounds like your girlfriend is a christian
scare quotes aren't necessary. Her friend on the other hand sounds awfully judgemental. At least your gf isn't overly concerned, so you shouldn't be either :hi:

9. fellow atheist here.
When I was single I dated a Jehovah's Witness, a few born-agains, a few relaxed christians. Friends and families were always objecting. Even my current in-laws (14 years) still can't get over that their daughter is married to a non-believer.

I never let it bother me, if fact I usually went out of my way to irritate those who complained.

13. I'm an atheist too
and my gf (and her family) are christians. I was at her grandpas funeral two weekends ago..it was a really sad affair, and I sacraficed a lot to be there with my gf and her family. Her family loves me....but..well, they don't know I'm not christian.

So anyways, some of her family was sitting there, reminiscing about Grandpa, and one granddaughter started saying, "I remember how grandpa used to never judge the guys I dated. He always tried to be nice regarding my choices."

I smiled, and started feeling welcome...and then she said. "Yeah, he always said..'I don't care who the person is, as long as he believed in a god'".

Um...whaaaa. *gulp*

I'm kind of glad he didn't find out I was an atheist. He really seemed to like me...he probably just assumed I was catholic. And this was from a really liberal, unfundy, great family. My close family has many atheists in it, but no one would ever think of denying somebody who wasn't atheist (as almost nobody outside the family who marries in is atheist).

14. Most idiot christians view non christians as evil
Seriously. They act as if all non christians are the devil. It's not fair at all. My husband is agnostic. He is the most awesome person in the world. Most of the fundy christians that meet him are so shocked to find out that he's agnostic. Attention fundy Christians who may be reading this: You CAN have morals and be a nice, good person without believing in your hateful, vengeful god. I'm a Christian, and I'm embarrassed by my fellow Christians everyday. The god the worship is NOT God. The god they worship is greed.

15. My simplistic thoughts
From what I understand, a true "christian" would not be judgmental. I don't see that very often, but that's what would happen in an alternate universe where christians actually practiced what their Christ taught.

I'm not a christian, and surround myself with........pretty much no one who is judgmental. It's a matter of survival for me.

You two should have some great and intense discussions over the years! I wish you luck.

People often say things they have been programmed to think. Take it with a grain of salt and let it slide?

:hi:

17. hey, I came from an area where a mixed marriage was between
a Methodist and a Baptist or (God Forbid) Church of Christ. Church of Christ persons rarely dated outside their own denomination. They had the inside track you see. (hope I;m not offending anyone here, it was the way it was)

We had so few Jewish persons that wasn't even an issue and well, dating a Catholic just wasn't done.

LOL, now there is so much more to worry about..gasp..for those narrow minded folks. Inter-racial marriages, atheist marriages, liveing together without marriages etc. I just sit back and giggle!

Your GF sounds like a great person; my husband is a non believer too. He tells me every year when I am deciding how much to donate to my church to be sure and add some in based on his income too and not just mine. Why? Because he respects and admires the mission and charity work this church sponsors, and the very liberal theology is refreshing to him as he was raised Southern Baptist. I am a United Methodist.

19. LOL...my parents had issues because one was Baptist, one Episcopalian
It was a big deal when they got married. They decided to go Methodist because their friends went there, and it seemed a good middle ground. I was glad to be brought up Methodist. Decades later, her parents, the Bapists, still aren't too happy about it.

21. cause they know you arent really saved, you know?
because you just got sprinkled.

My own aunt refused to offer me the communion plate in a Church of Christ service once...I was flabbergasted, having been raised in the tradition of it being Christ's table, and all.

18. I remember the "Christian Union" at university
it was dominated by Ulster protestants ( :scared: ), I had a good friend who was an active member and they had this big thing about bringing "non-christian" friends along to events and so to stop her bugging me too much I did go on occasion (it finished early enough to get a few rounds in at the pub afterwards). Once was the session nearest to St. Valentine's day - the whole thing was about how you shouldn't date non-christians, about how if you're in a room alone with your b/g-f the door should be open, you shouldn't sit on a bed together...

But then they were known to hold prayer meetings near Roman Catholic students' bedrooms to pray for their conversion to Christianity. :puke:

20. You should've asked me directly.
1. Fake a conversion to Christianity.
2. Get to know her friend a little better.
3. Work it into a three-way.

Jeez, do I have to tell you every-fucking-thing?!?

23. Fuck that shit, HEyHEY. And screw her.
I've never met you either, but you're A-1 100% aces in my book. Who cares about your beliefs? That's your business and no one else's. Makes me ashamed to be a Christian, that girl.

For "Christians" like her, it's not about 'love thy neighbor'; it's about, as my pastor says, "getting your hide into Heaven." Not very Christian.

You ARE damn good guy, man. Stay that way.

25. Why is her opinion so important if you've never met her?
Come on dude. You don't even know this woman. Why does her opinion cause this much angst? And from what you already know about her, I can't imagine I'd place much value in her opinions even if I did.

Or do you actually feel you may not be good enough? Well you are. People either appreciate you or they don't deserve you. It shouldn't matter that anyone else problem with you as long as they keep it their problem and don't make it yours.

You might tell your girlfriend not to tell you things like that from now on.
