Poll question: Grateful Dead: Yes or No?
The 'Dead ("Eyes of the World") just came up on my 'Dan playlist on Pandora. My dad has been to over 100 'Dead concerts, and I must say that I really like them, though I don't really know many of their songs beyond "Sugar Magnolias" or "Casey Jones" or this song now. But still.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

4. May I ask why?
I'm not trying to be belligerent, as I'm far from a Deadhead, but I'm just curious why people like them or don't like them.

:hi:

5. If your father has concert tapes, or Dick's Picks, you'll hear good stuff.
Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 09:23 PM by Gormy Cuss
The Dead were mediocre studio musicians and uneven in concert but when they hit it they jammed some wonderful stuff.

Listen to 'Ripple,' and a few 'Birdsongs' to hear some of their acoustic best.

Make some kind veggie burritos for your father too.:P

You know that "Eyes" has one of the best Mondegreens, don't you?
"Wake up to discover that you are disguised as a girl."

My dad has no 'Dead studio albums, just a whole bunch of Dick's Picks and whatnot.

Like my father would eat a veggie burrito.

8. Yes -- In "small doses".
I do love Jerry Garcia's guitar playing, though.

11. If you voted "no" then you obviously haven't taken enough drugs
Personally, I haven't taken any drugs in years, but I'm still listening to Dick's Pick's Volume 4 on the way to work in the mornings. Well, that and Marilyn Manson.

And while my greatest regret in life is that I can't play the guitar -- at least not anything harder than "Three Blind Mice" -- I'm enough of a music lover to be able to apreciate Jerry as a phenomenal guitarist. Listen to the "Shady Grove" album if you don't believe me.

14. I hate their music...

And all the parking lot people decided to make 13th street their new home after Jerry's death.

edit -- I would like to add that. I met Jerry Garcia around the age of eight. Ken Kesey has a daughter named Sunshine. She was friends with my sister in high school. On occasion we would go over to Ken's house. A huge barn that they made into a house. It was very cool. This was in Pleasant Hill Oregon.

15. Another no
I fell asleep at one of their shows in 1987 or 86 I was so bored. Over the next few days I was talking to my Deadhead friends and they were so excited that Jerry "kicked" during the first nights show and felt that the Roanoke show was blessed because of it. I was like what do you mean "kicked"? Like kicked ass? No, he stepped back while playing and kicked his leg up. Ok. Doesn't take much to ammuse deadheads aparently.

Disclosure: I was at the time a punk rocker. Well actually 20 years later I still am. The only reason I went to the show was because of a girl. Imagine that.

22. To paraphrase Mark Twain: Their music is better than it sounds.

I like them and respect their philosophy, but could never get into them like I did other bands.

26. complete opposite opinion
i prefer their live stuff. The Dead weren't a studio band. They were a group of guys who enjoyed playing music together. Of course there were shows where they played horrible, but, that unscripted free-flow of music, the imperfections are what i love about them.
