Best music video ever?
I'm going with "Into the Great Wide Open" (or, if you prefer, Rebel Without A Clue) by Tom Petty. Complete with Johnny Depp as Eddie, the clueless rocker and Tom as the roadie named Bart.

For videos actually made in the 21st century (ie, videos nobody's seen) I'd vote for "Best of You" by Foo Fighters.

What say you?

1. Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
If we are talking only 21st century.

Of all time would take some thinking - probably Closer by NIN, but only the unedited version. It is one of the most twisted pieces of filth you will ever lay eyes on.

2. today? Gold Digger by Kanye West
and his harem of some of the most beautifully fleshy, squishy women I've ever seen in my life. Only one set of ribs showing in this whole video. I hope whoever did this won an award for it, because it's stylistically beautiful. I'd like to lay them all out on my floor and just roll back and forth across them...

The first for its historical significance. The second because it's the best.

10. Definitely "Sledgehammer" because of the intricate technical
effects and I'll add to it "Take on Me" by Aha because of the rotoscope animation and NIN's "Only" which won an award for outstanding visual effects in a music video from the Visual Effects Society.

It was of the Christmas truce in WWI and he played both an English and a German soldier. It told a nice little story that went with the song.

15. Personally, I'm partial to machinima.
Definition of machinima at Wikipedia:

a portmanteau of machine cinema or machine animation, is both a collection of associated production techniques and a film genre (film created by such production techniques). As a production technique, the term concerns the rendering of computer-generated imagery (CGI) using real-time, interactive (game) 3D engines, as opposed to high-end and complex 3D animation software used by professionals. Engines from first person shooter video games are typically used. Consequently, the rendering can be done in real-time using PCs (either using the computer of the creator or the viewer), rather than with complex 3D engines using huge render farms. As a film genre, the term refers to movies created by the techniques described above. Usually, machinimas are produced using the tools (demo recording, camera angle, level editor, script editor, etc.) and resources (backgrounds, levels, characters, skins, etc.) available in a game. Sometimes television commercials may be made with machinima, such as a recent Coca Cola commercial.

These are all based on World of Warcraft, partly because WoW is so popular, and partly because that's what I've been playing for the past year or two.

17. BUT there are some I missed out on
believe it or not, my town BANNED MTV! Seriously, they had a "Committee of 50" that considered themselves the "gatekeepers" of the community. So during my teen angst years, I could only LISTEN to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, RHCP, the Jesus Mary Chain, Pixies, Etc.

Years later, though, I have to add as my submission as one of the best videos:

In Bloom by Nirvana. So good-humored and light-hearted, hilarious for Nirvana. I would love ANYthing by Nirvana (and do) but this video is so ironic and fun...

I live in VA and I thought it was last in every single thing. You've given me hope that there are more backwards people in America.

Our election this Nov. is about a bigot who say "macaca" and has a long history of supporting the Confederacy.
Please tell me there are actually more backwards people!

20. Well, if it makes you feel better!
Yes, indeed, they DID ban MTV in my town. We also couldn't buy alcohol on Sundays, which is way LESS weird than all the freaky laws they have here in Oklahoma.

This is part of why I resisted and hated New Mexico for most of my life. Only recently have I realized the potential of the state, and come to know that it's not ALL like that.

But I really think the anti-youth, anti-subculture laws, policies, and attitudes contributed to what I am today. It sucked at the time, but those fuckers made me become a flaming commie liberal with an AGENDA. Heh heh. And NOW I'm coming back to their state.

24. wake me up before you go

Jitterbug <4X>

You put the boom-boom into my heart
You send my soul sky high when your lovin' starts
Jitterbug into my brain
Goes a bang-bang-bang 'til my feet do the same
But something's bugging you
Something ain't right
My best friend told me what you did last night
Left me sleepin' in my bed
I was dreaming, but I should have been with you instead.

Wake me up before you go-go
Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go-go
I don't want to miss it when you hit that high
Wake me up before you go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go
Take me dancing tonight
I wanna hit that high (yeah, yeah)

You take the grey skies out of my way
You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day
Turned a bright spark into a flame
My beats per minute never been the same

'Cause you're my lady, I'm your fool
It makes me crazy when you act so cruel
Come on, baby, let's not fight
We'll go dancing, everything will be all right

Wake me up before you go-go
Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go-go
I don't want to miss it when you hit that high
Wake me up before you go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin'' on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go
Take me dancing tonight
I wanna hit that high (yeah, yeah, baby)

(Jitterbug)
(Jitterbug)

Cuddle up, baby, move in tight
We'll go dancing tomorrow night
It's cold out there, but it's warm in bed
They can dance, we'll stay home instead

(Jitterbug)

Wake me up before you go-go
Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go-go
I don't want to miss it when you hit that high
Wake me up before you go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go
Take me dancing tonight
Wake me up before you go-go, don't you dare to leave me hanging on like a
yo-yo
Take me dancing

(Boom-boom-boom)

25. They Don't Know - Tracey Ullman
It's a mindless little piece of pop fluff, but I just love the song so much. The perfect earworm. The video is great too because Ullman has such a great sense of humour. You can tell that she doesn't take any of it very seriously.

36. yeah, she's great
it's a great song by someone who was tremendously talented and decided to have a pop hit in addition to that, kind of like Toni Basil's "Mickey" which I adored, but I knew she was a choreographer before I ever saw it, plus I was a cheerleader so that's another reason I liked that one. Here's another video Basil choreographed:

33. Mid-eighties ad for United Way......
showing scenes of the daily life of a homeless woman and her son set to Judy Collins beautiful song "My Father"...

"My father always promised us
That we would live in France.
We'd go boating on the Seine
And I would learn to dance.

We lived in Ohio then,
He worked in the mines.
On his dreams like boats we knew
We'd sail in time....."

The combination of the heartbreaking images in the United Way video and the Collins lyrics remembering home and family, was devastating.
