Forrest: Live from Las Vegas!
Well, sorta half-alive, anyway...

A couple of the backing tracks had issues ("Blue Suede Shoes" had an extraneous piece I had to cut, throwing the start off a bit, and the "Mystery Train/Tiger Man" medley didn't have enough time given to the second line of lyrics -- I don't know what that was all about and didn't want to play around with trying to extend it by grafting on another piece -- so I had to rush that bit...also "Polk Salad Annie" is missing some instrumentation that would have been nice) but I hope, if you want to hear any of these, that they more or less do the trick. The '70s versions of the '50s songs here are pretty short.

I started recording these after a solid nine hours of singing, but I kinda like the thrashed aspect of my voice, which is fairly rough on some of the tracks, because it's probably a bit how the real Elvis felt after doing two shows a night every single night during his month-long Vegas engagements... :-)

Polk Salad Annie (live, 1970-1977; this is the early 2/70 version) MP3 - 6.82 MB; 4:51)

Heartbreak Hotel (live, 1969-1977) MP3 - 2.65 MB; 1:53)

Love Me Tender (live, 1969-1977) MP3 - 2.35 MB; 1:40)

Blue Suede Shoes (live, 1969-1977) MP3 - 1.62 MB; 1:08)

Bad night last night, and probably a bad weekend (bad people in town, apparently), but it's otherwise been getting better and better.

Though it's been too long since I've 'seen' you...

We've got to spice it up over there!

8. Is this sugar, or spice?

:D

Actually, a minute ago I just talked to my work partner and we decided to skip tonight and maybe give it another shot on Sunday, with tactical withdrawal an option...the Strip's been overrun by the very worst kind of visitors, hopefully for their last big blowout before the happier times of Fall resume. Security people we talked to last night are dreading this weekend, because they already see what kind of people are in town, and we had major problems with some bozos last night. I had to twice stop my more hotheaded (older, but hotheaded) partner from getting in fistfights and I had to twice push groups of unruly young men out of casino doors, like I was a bouncer...I was, at least, dressed up in a replica of Elvis' kenpo uniform, complete with eighth degree black belt. :D My partner (ex-military with a background in security work) was actually impressed with my ability to scare the sh** out of drunken young, belligerent punks just by the pressure of my hand on their backs or arms because he's never seen me manhandle anyone before. I thought coming here for a visit was supposed to be fun, not combat... :-(

So, yes, I'm already meleor...mealy...melee...it's already getting more better. :headbang:

10. Awww...dat's sugar.
Dang. Sounds like the same reason I didn't book a room in New Orleans tonight...didn't want to have to deal with the drunk college kids' noisy partying.

Those drunk jerks last night didn't know that the belt you were wearin' wasn't just costume, did they? Pity them if they should have pressed you and found out. :D

21. It had me worried.
I had made a list of what I needed to do and started to gather boxes.

I couldn't afford to leave my coffee maker in the trailer during a storm, it wouldn't be around when I got back as the trailer would prolly be gone or at least in someone's yard.

thanks again for the comforting advice. :hi:

15. Thanks!
I guess I'd qualify alongside you, as a '70s fan, in that I love his voice then and his onstage abilities were just honed to perfection by the early '70s. He was also more accessible, in a way, and part of it is definitely that there's more material, visual and audio, available from the '70s (whether official or fan-recorded and bootlegged) than from any time before. The Sun era, for example, is so undocumented that it's not even certain when some of his studio sessions and live dates were, and there's very little concert footage or concert audio from the '50s.

He was incredible in the '50s, and his '60s output included some of the best stuff he ever recorded, but I do tend to listen mostly to the 1969-76 recordings. And when I recently drifted into impersonation it was the '70s Elvis for me not just because I looked more like thirtysomething Elvis (even in my 20s, that was more the case than would have been trying to approximate 21-year-old Elvis) but because the jumpsuits, the martially-inspired stage moves, the power ballads and all that are just so iconic.

Elvis may have changed the world in the '50s, but he fit the King title (not that he liked it) to perfection in the '70s. A lot of people fail to understand, too, that musically (and charisma-wise, of course) Elvis was not really any different in his last recording session than he was in his first...he always did what he wanted (movies excepted) and drew from his many eclectic musical influences in doing so, and smarmy music critics who say he sold out or lost his ability to rock never understood that at all.

Long live the King! Accept no imitations (except me, I mean... :P )!

Elvis supposedly had a pair -- wouldn't be surprised if they were a gift in light of the song -- but I don't know that he ever wore them. He pretty much lived in boots (San Marco and other Italian kinds and Florsheim...the 'Beatles' boots kind) for most of the '60s and all of the '70s, anyway. :D

You guitar man, you...

I know you like this song, too, so I uploaded my humble attempt at it:

You Don't Know Me

And here're the chords to Elvis' version, for when you want to give it a try...

You Don't Know Me
-----------------

Tune guitar 1/2 step down (from low to high: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb)

C
You give your hand to me and then you say hello
C7 F
And I can hardly speak, my heart is beating so
C A7 Dm G7
And anyone could tell, you think you know me well
C D7 G7
But you don't know me

C
No you don't know the one who dreams of you at night
C7 F
And longs to kiss your lips and longs to hold you tight
C A7 Dm G7
To you I'm just a friend, and that's all I've ever been
C F C C7
No, you don't know me

F C
For I never knew the art of making love
Dm G7 C
Though my heart aches with love for you
Am Em
Afraid and shy I let my chance go by
D7 G7
The chance that you might love me too

C
You give your hand to me and then you say good-bye
C7 F
I watch you walk away beside the lucky guy
C A7 Dm G7
To never, never know the one who loves you so
C F C
No, you don't know me

My goodness...I'm glad you liked 'em!

His studio version of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" is slower, but still quite different from Dusty's original. It's a great song, by him or by Ms Springfield, any way you cut it.

"Sweet Caroline" is pretty different, too...it's been Elvisized! Actually, Neil Diamind recorded it in Memphis, in 1969, at the same time Elvis was using the studio (Elvis at night, Neil during the day).
