}(

It is called "plural."

9. Yup
Unless, of course, I'm the one using them.

Of course, when I do it, it's perfectly hunky-dory because I'm usually doing it to annoy someone so...

Mission accomplished.

Not that I'd EVER deliberately try and annoy you, dearest.

But I was an English major, and am a writer, and an editor, and so those kinds of things will always bug me. I try very hard not to be a complete grammar nazi, but sometimes it's difficult.

15. Ok i just have to say it.!!
And i mean this in the nicest way.
Even those who type, write, and spell like shit still have important voices and things to say.
Being a stickler for details is an admirable quality.
I wish My spelling and Grammar was as good as it used to be but it's not!
And I don't believe I need to brush up on my literary skills just so I am not ridiculed by people who have no idea who i really am.

So please try to over look a few grammar crimes.
Read the intent of the message..not the delivery
thank you

17. Yes and no.
Yes when it's in formal writing...and especially so when in a scientific journal and the same picky f***ers who correct the hell out of my manuscript let the silverbacks of the field publish whatever the hell they want, written whatever-the-f*** way...but I digress.

No in casual communication, and certainly in speech. Sure, some things can be like fingernails on a blackboard even then, but colloquial speech and writing needs to be loose. I write on DU pretty much as I speak.

19. Yes, especially when I see it in Internet postings by
people who claim to be college students.

(I saw just such an illiterate example the other night on a website that rated apartment buildings. One comment about a complex near the University of Minnesota was apparently written by a student, because he compared the building unfavorably to the dorm he had lived in the previous year. He had evidently never heard of capital letters, punctuation, standard spelling, or the correct tenses of verbs. In other words, he wrote like the typical contributor to the Hate Mailbag. I had to wonder why he hadn't flunked out on the basis of his writing alone.)

37. In some instances
If it's an official publication, advertisement, etc. of/for an organization or business, I'm going to hold that against them. It makes me think they consider proofreading so unimportant that they don't even take the time to do it, or that no one from the place knows the errors are errors- which is pretty sad.

But in casual conversation, it usually doesn't bother me. Someone can sound quite ignorant and know a good deal more of the particular subject they're discussing, than someone who can speak "intelligently." And in message board postings, errors usually don't bother me, except for a select few, including using apostrophes to make words plural, and some spelling errors. However, I am (usually) a polite person and am not going to correct someone over something like that. (Maybe if something really bothered me, I'd do it in as polite a way as possible, but usually somebody will have already jumped on them about it!)

As for me, I like to think I have pretty good grammar, but I know I write substantially better than I speak. And even then, while I have a particular talent for spelling (now, watch me make some stupid typo and make that claim look ridiculous) I am guilty of some other errors, such as overusing commas. (My philosophy is that it's better to overuse than underuse, but I know even that will bother those who know better.) Also, I will probably die before I fully understand the intricacies of using "affect" vs. "effect"! But I'm going to leave people alone about the way they speak; after all, I use "y'all", say "humid" like "yew-mid", and "poem" like "poym", so I'd have plenty of things that they could zing me with if I went about correcting their speech!

I proofread and mess around with words all day at work, so when I'm on my own time I want to just relax. The older I get, the less pedantic I am.
