I don't like classical music |
|
I don't mean to denigrate people who do. I just don't. Oh, and for those of you who listen to classical music, by "people" I mean those creatures you ask to be quiet when they have the gall to sneeze during a concert.

1. That's fine, but I would argue that you haven't heard enough of it |
|
To my mind there's some classical music out there for everybody--not getting off on the big Germans composers doesn't get you off the hook.
:D
But it's certainly possible that the whole genre just isn't for you. However if you love music in some other form, odds are there's a classical piece that can recreate some of that joy for you.

2. Sneezers at a Classical music concert???? |
|
:wtf:
The unmitigated gall of some people/creatures! :grr:
(I don't mean to denigrate you mycritters2, but sounds as if you may have experienced the traumatic experience of being THE sneezer at a Classical music concert. )

One reason why I love Andre Rieu. I'm pretty sure he'd be okay with sneezers.

4. Concerts in the winter have lots of sneezers, coughers, etc. |
|
It is the paper rattlers that deserve to die.
"Classical" is used broadly to describe a wide variety of styles over several hundred years of music.
What kind of music do you like?
I like much classical music. Right now, however, I am listening to P-Funk performing "(Not Just) Knee Deep".

10. I like many styles of music, but country just kinda sucks. |
|
Just sayin'. Not all, but most in my opinion. I like some of the old school stuff, like Hank Williams, and Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
Play the country recording backwards, and you get your truck back, dog back, and girl back.

I'm amazed at how many songs are about strong women. AS opposed to other genres which refer to women as bitches and hos, or only have videos of women wiggling their hips in front of drooling men.

20. Doesn't mean that the music is interesting as music. |
|
Gretchen Wilson is just the mirror image of the male honkeytonker IMHO.
And there is plenty of hip-wiggling in country videos, too. One was a direct imitation of black dance styles, only with young white women in very short cutoffs. The same kind of leering approach towards women.

That's like saying that rock 'n roll "types" have no sense of decency.
Sorry; but I don't understand this need we have to classify people into personality types based on their musical or artistic preferences. It's the stuff from which prejudice spawns.
Sometimes our impressions of different types of music, different cultures, different anythings are hampered by our notion of the situation...which is quite different from reality. Our notions are influenced by the commercials we've seen on TV, the opinions of people we both like and dislike, and our limited experience with the medium in question. They aren't easy to drop; but that's what needs to be done in order to have a hope of appreciating these different things.
Of course, some folks wish to cling to these notions, however negative they may be, because they make the world appear more black and white. If you're looking for something to listen to in a cd store for example, you can save a lot of time by avoiding the classical music aisle by dismissing the entire genre as something you don't like. And there are some people who simply can't allow themselves to enjoy sitting still for the full length of a concert. This doesn't make them worthy of less respect; but neither does it entitle them to put down those who can and do enjoy classical music.
I've never attended a concert where people frowned upon sneezers; though I'll admit that when in the midst of a sinus attack or a coughing fit, I try to discreetly head for an exit, so musicians and concert-goers can appreciate the music without having to listen to it. I've also offered dirty looks to people who can't respect the rest of the audience enough to refrain from yakking in the middle of the concert (or movie, or play), and folks with whiny children who need to be taken outside the hall.

Because it's his birthday?
It's not about country music at all, other than that was one of Bob's jokes the OP used to honor Bob's birthday.

11. Lotsa people cheered when the Three Tenors sang "Nessun Dorma" |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 04:30 PM by CTyankee
on the tee vee. They just killed with that aria. It's thrilling, you gotta admit. It builds to this fabulous orgasmic (musically of course)moment and oh, man, do they just put it over the top!
To those of you who haven't experienced this great moment, you have a treat in store for you. Check out the CD at your local music store, or get it on your IPod. Be the first on your block. You'll listen again, I guarantee it!
I could go on with a list of "orgasmic" so-called "classical" music, but I'll save it for another time. Stay tuned...

I love lyrics. That is just the way I like my music. Although I can appreciate a classical masterpiece, I need lyrics with my music.

19. Hey, see my post above! |
|
"Nessun Dorma" is a huge opera aria. YOu can find the lyrics on line, just as you can most opera lyrics if you just type in the name of the aria in quotes on Google.
This music is so thrilling that you'll want to know more about it. Opera just works on you! For pure melodic lines, check out Puccini (Madame Butterfly (Un Bel Di), Tosca (Vissi D'arte), Turandot (Nessun Dorma) and of course La Boheme (Mi chiamino Mimi). You will love it!
