Gnats!
Damn things are sneaking through the window screen, and there are about 75 of them wandering around on my Powerbook screen.

Who whas the old comic-strip character who used to say "Gnats!" when he was upset? Was it Steve Roper?

5. Wait till they meet Mister Hand Vaccuum. They'll be surprised, I bet.
I'm only giving them a few more minutes of recreation time.

So it's not such a bad deal after all, yes?

12. Sure, why not. Lead me to the bunnies! It's funny; the gnats are getting
confused as hell because the screen changes light and dark parts when I post or scroll.

You'd not think their tiny little brains would be capable of confusion, would you?

13. Heya baby girl!

Some stuff came up and I had to leave DU for a while to deal with it. I'll probably be back sporadically as I'm able. I've missed the hell out of you guys, though. I trust you've held down the Naughty Girls Brigade in my absence...?

:hi:

You'd have been proud of her; the Brigade's sassitude was well taken care of.

Not, of course, that it was quite the same without you...

Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 08:59 PM by DaveTheWave
It was during boot camp up in the hills of Georgia. The gnats were so bad on time at lunch you could shoosh them off your food with your hand but about a dozen or so would still stay or fly back on the food. We were all so hungry after marching about ten miles and running through the woods all morning that we didn't care.

Extra meat!

16. Organic solutions are always preferred
Gnats are usually easy to distract by swatting. They're simple bugs.
from Wiki:
The term gnat is applied as a colloquial name to any of various small insects in the order Diptera and specifically within the suborder Nematocera. This suborder represents the more primitive members of the Dipteran order

Usually it's best to leave the place where they're swarming for a bit and let them disperse on their own.;)

I wouldn't get to complain!

Besides, if I'm going to be moving to The Great North Woods, I'd damn better get used to bugs in the summer, shouldn't I?

22. Buy a large Slurpee.
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 09:44 PM by BrightKnight
Fruit flies/ gnats were a huge problem for me until I figured out how to solve it:

1) Buy the largest 7/11 Slurpee (in a clear cup).

2) Drink or otherwise dispose of 90 % of the Slurpee.

3) Put a small piece of foil over the opening and pierce it with pencil. The hole should be the diameter of the pencil.

4) Place the trap near the infestation and watch them ALL fly in. They could probably escape but they are to fat and happy to try. They will eventually settle into the liquid.

5) Place the trap in the microwave and remove the foil. Zap the trap for about 30 seconds.

----
It is kind of evil but it very effective.

I have found that the smaller Slurpee cups are not as effective. Clear traps work better than opaque traps.

Sometimes you have to experiment with bait. I have used Coke from the Slurpee, orange juice, wine, grape juice, jam, ripe bananas, and apple slices.

a 7-11 in town.

24. A large glass jar
A large glass jar will also work. Just pierce the lid with a screwdriver or use foil with a rubber band.

Nothing works as well as a large Slurpee glass. The clear domed top confuses them and they very rarely escape. I have seen them escape from jar traps but they are usually to content to try.

I'll save the next one.
