:grr: There was a Lounge post about this very rude telephone tactic not long back. Well, my father-in-law just pulled it on me. He called, apparently expecting my husband to answer. When I did, without saying hello, he said, "Who is this?" I could tell it was his voice, but because he said it so rudely, I said, "I don't know. Who are you?" He sort of paused, and then he said, "Oh, it's FIL. Is (insert husband's name) there?" I said, "Sure. Just a minute."
OMFG, I was so put out with him.... :grr: :nuke: What a fucking RUDE thing to do to anyone on the phone.... I'm not having the best of days, and this is just the icing on the cake... :P

"Yes, I would like to order two x-large two topping pizza, and a two liter of soda."
Puts people off sometimes...:) :hi:

5. yeah, I hardly do it anymore |
|
but when i was 20-23 I did it quite a bit...:) Because only a few select people knew our number, so more than likely the caller would understand the sarcasm, and play/run with it...:)

"G=boro Gynecology; no problem we can't lick!" SORRY if this is "inappropriate"; I had to share.

2. That's how I respond to those calls... |
|
caller: "who is this?"
me: "that depends. who is THIS?"
caller: usually a random sound or awkward silence
me: "hey, you called ME, Sparky!"
That usually ends the call. I'm normally very polite on the phone, but that crap sets me off.

7. Yeah, that's my reaction too. |
|
 They called ME... I'm normally polite on the phone too, but there have been times when I've said the same thing as I did to FIL this morning, and they're taken by surprise. And my response is, "You called me. What do you need?"
Oh, and to top it all off, FIL knows there are only two people who live here---yours truly and hubby. :P

That used to happen at work a lot. Students would call us while they were at work and then got a phone call on their end. I gave instructions to my staff that if someone asked if they could put us on hold that staff members were to say no, but we'll call you back. We got their phone numbers and called them back in 30 minutes. People have to learn how RUDE it is to call someone and put THEM on hold!!! :grr:
Sorry that happened to you, sweetie!

10. I can not STAND people like that on the phone. |
|
They're calling ME. They don't know who they're calling? Give me a break. It annoys the crap out of me. Seems like people don't understand basic manners any more. My daughter has friends who call and block their numbers. I don't accept blocked numbers so they have to dial in something...so they think they're clever and they dial 123 456 7890 and then, when I answer, they hang up. You wanna talk to my daughter? Have the balls...much less the courtesy...to speak to me and ASK to talk to my daughter.
Heh...most of the neighborhood is afraid of me, apparently.
Or so I hear.
Good.

When somebody calls and says something like "Is John there"? I say "Yes. Yes, he is". Then I just wait until they smarten up and say "May I speak to him"? Everybody should learn this stuff in kindergarten.

15. "Never answer that question... |

until they identify themselves and say who they are trying to reach." - More words of wisdom from my mom.
More than just etiquette, it's a matter of safety, especially for children.

"Who is this?" i'll answer, "I don't know, but since you called me perhaps you know" it is kinda rude. messing with them can be good fun, though.

I've called my son's apartment when he was living alone. An unfamiliar voice answers and I nicely say "hi, who's this?..(pause) Is Adam around? "
I don't think I'm being rude, but that's the only time I ever say "who is this?"
No one ever calls me so I don't have many phone etiquette issues.
