1. Condoms, a .38 special, and a full set of Encylopedia Brown books
written on toilet paper with a toothpick and his own blood by an insane death row inmate who thinks he's Liza Minelli's avatar and so killed three families of mennonite farmers in South Dakota with various office products, used alphabetically.

4. Either a savings bond
or some kind of educational toy...
They don't know anything at one and the parents will probably spoil him with other things.....

But the smash cake is great :)

If you can fund them that cheap. Oh yea, make it so he can't access it for 17 years, and then only for tuition and books. ;)

13. I gave my niece and nephew a Radio Flyer Red Wagon...
You know, just a plain red wagon on four wheels with a thingy to pull it with?
And, if you can scrounge one, a great big BOX, like the kind a dishwasher or refrigerator would come in.
The folks will love the wagon, and the kid will love the box.
It'll be a cave, an airplane, a train, a secret hideout, a racecar...
Trust me. I used to be one. A kid, I mean. :silly:

make sure it comes in a BIG box. He'll have more fun with that than he will with whatever toy came in it.

16. The first three years...save up for their 4th year present.
Honestly, its not like they are gonna friggin remember anyways. Buying presents for kids that young is more for the parent than the kid.

For my nephews first birthday, I bought him a cardboard book about dinosaurs. He loves books...my sister says thats all they ever want to play with...just read it to them with sound effects, and they get hooked.

Do you like his parents? You could get him his first drum ... or one o' those "workbench" things that comes with a hammer and things to pound through the block. Noisy, yeah, but they love 'em.

Easy, cheap, and he can do them himself. Don't spend a zillion dollars, and don't fall prey to the gender stereotypes.
