Dylan - Love and Theft or Modern Times? |
|
I have been going back and forth on this argument - In my opinion Time out of Mind is better than both of them ((Please acknowledge I wish not to go back any further than his latest 3 albums))
I have listened to MT and L&T over and over again these past few days and keep flip-flopping on which is better.
For me L&T has some great tracks - Mississippi - High Water - Honest With Me - Cry Awhile
But so does MT - Spirit on the Water - When the Deal Goes Down - Someday Baby - Workingman's Blues #2 - Nettie Moore - Ain't Talkin'
I have more on the list for MT - but on the other hand - I don't think any of them hold up to Mississippi or High Water, but overall there are MORE good songs on MT
your thoughts....
Dylan rules.

1. Does one really have to be better |

I believe you are allowed to like them both equally. I do.

No one is going to argue that Empire Burlesque is better than Blood on the Tracks - so I am just asking a more difficult question - that's all.... :)

3. Love And Theft by a hair IMO |
|
I'd say Modern Times has the better ballads, and Love And Theft has the better uptempos. Lyrically, they are pretty equal, with Modern Times having interesting musings. I'd give the edge to Love And Theft, because Modern Times has a couple mid-tempo semi-swing songs like "Spirit On The Water" that don't really do it for me. And Dylan's voice is a little better on Love And Theft (partly due to the difference in song lengths.)
