He certainly wasn't poor. MOre like upper middle class. He joined Hasty Pudding and Pi Eta at Harvard, so it wasn't like he was out of the mainstream.

My point is that he was drafted during a time of relative peace even with his cyst and Rush was NOT during a time of war. That seems strange to me.
