"All The King's Men" would be my #2 followed by "Marie Antoinette" & "The Queen."

Having lived in L.A. for 11 years, I always found that case morbidly fascinating. The site where they found her body (39th and Norton) now has a house there. Creepy. I read a book by this lady that claimed her father had killed Elizabeth Short. He was supposedly involved in weird rituals with Aleister Crowley and L.Ron Hubbard. Probably complete bollocks but interesting nonetheless.
