Venting time: I HATE my job...
:grr: :nuke: Last October (2005), I left my job of seven years (and profession of 20 years) to take the job I have now. I had high hopes for it since it was 1) more money, 2) home based, and 3) still in the same field as before but a different, (supposedly) less stressful side of the coin. Well, the further I get with it, the more frustrated and irritated I get with it. :( I had begun to feel burned out with my previous job, which happens a lot with student financial aid, but I didn't hate the job. I now work as a school account manager for a student loan company, and it blows chunks. :( From the school side of things, account manager jobs appear more glamorous and fun; I'm here to say unequivocally that they're NOT. One thing that really ticks me off is the corporate mentality. Many professions are victims of this bullshit, and this one is no exception. If I were allowed to do my job the way I need to, that would be one thing; however, there are so many stupid restrictions and dumb, unnecessary requirements that it bogs down the account managers to the point of being unable to function properly. The company I work for prides itself on "work/life balance"; however, the only "balance" I see is the fact that my office is in my house. They expect us to put in long, long hours, including weekends, and I just won't do it. I experienced the effects of long, stressful hours in my previous job, and I just won't do that to myself again.

I'm actively looking for a better job in the field in which I worked previously. I don't want to do exactly the same thing, because it would lead to that same burnout. However, I know there is a better job for me, and I'm determined to find it.

The good things about taking the job I have now are: 1) getting out from under the 60-day notice requirement my old job had written into my contract (along with all other "key employees"); that made it nearly impossible to leave since few other employers want to wait that long; 2) getting an increase in salary from my previous job; I was underpaid there, as were all the other employees on that campus, and at least now my salary is up to speed; 3) learning that doing this job is NOT what I want to do.

Thank you for letting me rant. :) I feel a little better now. I'm off to continue beating the bushes for my new dream job. :P

12. Good luck, New Wave Chick!
My job sucks, too. No pay raise or promotion in six years, no end in sight to getting out of my hellhole other than a pink slip.

Arg. I know your frustration. I'd like to bet you a good bottle of liquor to see who finds his or her dream job first, but I know I'll end up losing.

13. Thanks, man...
My old job had no pay raises for the last four years thanks to a cheapskate Board of Trustees. They raised money for faculty salaries and on-campus building and improvement projects, but somehow they forgot the already-greatly-underpaid galley slaves in the administration. That was a real morale-buster, so I feel your pain. :(

I hope you find yours soon!

18. Fortunately, no.
I was a state employee from 1985 to 1998, but I haven't been one since then. I know about the state issues---they're really terrible. :(

16. That's the problem with govt and education jobs
Bureaucracy, petty politics, game-playing, poorly trained managers and abysmal pay. The only redeeming factors are benefits and relative job security. I worked education for 20 years and changed careers, going into the profit world. I was fortunate in the company I chose. I really enjoy my job, have a great boss (that's always the most important ingredient) and great people on my team. And I do get monetarily rewarded according to my work. The irony is that my job responsibilities are far less than the jobs I had in education, but the pay is way more. That's not to say there haven't been ups and owns, but in the long run I've been pretty happy.

I do hope you find a job as satisfying as the one I have. (I find it's how I size up the the people in the company I interview that tells me the most about the company).

21. It may actually be the company I work for that's the problem.
The corporate culture sucks, as I have found out, and it reminds me of The Office, except not funny. :( The only saving grace is that because I work in a remote location, I don't see the bullshit firsthand every day. I see it enough, though.

I'm glad you work for a good company. :)

38. Good luck with the quest
It's out there, somewhere...you never know, though, what turns out to be The Ideal Job for you may very well be something from out of left field, something that is perhaps peripheral to what you've already done or even something that's essentially unrelated but that uses the same transferable skills and maximizes your combination of character and experience attributes. I hope that, whatever it is, it finds you in the right time.

And then there's always the option of coming to Vegas, where we'll set you up as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator. :D

My best wishes go with you in your search...and for whatever good prospects find you, too, even though you weren't searching for them...
