Because Cain was a farmer and took an offering of grain to God. Abel was a rancher and took an offering of meat to God. But anyone who's read the Bible knows that God is a carnivore -- the Bible is dripping w/ God's bloodlust! So God was happier w/ Abel's offering than he was with Cain's, and Cain killed Abel in a fit of jealousy.
. . . and God sang, "that's why I love mankind."

There is also a reference to Cain in the song "The One", from albums "The One" and "Love Songs" (courtesy of Google).

15. Cain was the originator of the James Dean archetype |
|
But the LORD said , "Not so; whoever kills Cain, that person will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
I've been fascinated with Cain since my childhood.
"East of Eden" is a good movie too.

Had anyone ever died before Cain got into a fight with Abel? Did Cain realize that people were capable of dying? I'm not really up on all this biblical stuff, anymore.

22. For my #900 post... the correct answer |
|
He was symbolizing the ancient enmity between the pastoral and the agricultural lifestyles whose conflicts were at the heart of many Biblical stories (the pastoral Jews vs the agrarian Egyptians; the shepherd David slaying Goliath, champion of the land-grabbing invaders; the humble prophet Nathan in the court of, um, one of those Israelite kings).
Abel was idealized, of course, and painted as the innocent victim. But in fact the ways of his brother, Cain, were going to win out as humans became more civilized. The farmers "slew" the flock-tenders much in the same way in the 20th Century video killed the radio star. Not by willful design, but by the happenstance of competing interests. It is an allegory of progress.
