Are we (humans) Cro-Magnons?
Edited on Mon Sep-18-06 08:30 PM by HopeLives
Please don't laugh I'm really trying to find this out.

I have read 2 sources, one that gave a timeline for cro-magnons as 40,000 bce to 10,000 bce and another that says cro-magnons are identical to modern humans. I haven't found anything that provides a line of descendance from cro-magnon to us.

1. Cro-Magnons were anatomically modern humans...
who displaced the Neanderthals in Europe. Modern human populations in EUROPE are descendants of Cro-Magnons; not ALL modern humans descend from Cro-Magnons because the term refers to early H. sapiens in a specific region.

3. great answer
Have you read "The Seven Daughters of Eve"? Amazing book on the lineage of humanity using mitochondrial DNA.

4. I haven't read that...
although I need to; I have read a few things (can't remember exactly what) on the specific mitochondrial and Y=-chromosome lineages as markers for human territorial expansion, though.

5. the guy who wrote the book..
... is the guy who pretty much vaulted mitochondrial DNA analysis and a genetic tracer into being a respected method-- up until a few years ago, it was really doubted as being a valid method of tracing lineage.

2. Here is one definition of cro magnons:
"An early form of modern human (Homo sapiens) inhabiting Europe in the late Paleolithic Period and characterized by a broad face and tall stature. It is known from skeletal remains first found in the Cro-Magnon cave in southern France."

An early form ... so I guess our version has changed a bit from the cro-magnons. Modern homo sapiens shouldn't be considered cro-magnons, as I see it.

6. It is interesting because I read in my text that if you saw a
cro-magnon on the subway you wouldn't notice a difference between the cro-magnon and modern humans.

Maybe it is just that scientists only name ancestors that have major differences with modern humans and between each other. Perhaps the changes between cro-magnons and us are so imperceptible that they can't tell the difference in fossil samples between us and them.
