Steven Soderbergh give some of us a new German word (maybe: I haven't
verified the word or his definition. Maybe he made a German-sounding word up).

http://www.believermag.com/issues/200608/?read=interview_soderbergh

"I think I’ve got a word for the kind of sadness I’m talking about. Schoenfraun. The sadness of when you’re watching someone enjoy something that you think is substandard. Schoenfraun. Schoenfraun. It just sounds right. The ineffable sadness when someone is happy and something is not as good as it should be."

1. I think "Schadenfreude" is the word you heard.
I believe it means taking pleasure in another person's discomfort or unhappiness.

2. No. I am familiar with schadenfreude, which I, like everyone else
overuse, both in feeling and in conversation.

Schoenfraun is the word Soderbergh used.

11. Your post brings to mind two things (two that I'll discuss, anyway).
One is from the book In Cold Blood where Capote describes the killer Perry Smith's overreaching with his vocabulary, and uses the example of Perry saying, "The ineffable way he looks at me."

And the other is the Fatboy Slim/Macy Gray collaboration "Love Life" where Macy sings,

Said I'm gonna A ya
An' I'm gonna B ya
An' I'm gonna C ya
Gonna D ya
If I E ya
'Cause I wanna F ya
Yeah I wanna F ya (ooh)
Yeah I wanna F ya (ooh)

Can't find a clip for that song, but here is one for Demons.

I just showed this "word" to my husband, who has studied German for many years.......

He said it is not a proper word........fraun is not a word at all...

So........FWIW......

12. Mix up

"fraun" would be an old-fashioned shortening of "Frauen" - women.

He meant Schadenfreude.

Maybe "Schoenbraun" which would be a compliment on a nice tan.

13. Trust me I live in Germany, hubby is German
Soderbergh mispronounced Schadenfreud, for the quote you gave, it fits the meaning.

There is no English equivalent of this word, but it roughly means taking joy in someone else's sadness.

14. It doesn't fit the meaning at all-it's exactly reversed
He's talking about finding sadness in someone else's joy. If it isn't a word, it needs to be.

I feel Schoenfraun when people get off on Sonic Youth.
