My brother had to put his cat down today.
He found out that poor Alley had severe diabetes and the cost to merely stabilize her was $1,500 (which he does NOT have). So he had to make a horrible decision and have her put to sleep.

He stayed with her while she got her shot and in the last moment, he said that she looked up at him and locked eyes with him as if to say goodbye.

Rest in Peace Alley.

1. oh suzbaby, I'm so very sorry to hear about Alley...
Its so very difficult to let our furry babies go. Even when we know we are making the decision in their best interest. It doesn't make it any easier.

I had to make that same decision earlier this year for my sweet Emma. She was a parti-variety cocker spaniel and had severe kidney failure. We tried everything, including me giving her an i.v. daily, but it just wasn't helping. She was too far gone, and one day we knew what we had to do. We loved her too much to let her suffer.

Anyway, I am sending you and your brother hugs, and my sympathy for Alley's passing...

2. Suzbaby, I am sorry to hear of your brother's loss.
It is never easy saying goodbye to our faithful friends.

I had to put my Border Collie, Cody, to sleep last summer and it was one of the toughest things I have ever had to do.

Sending good thoughts and hugs to you and your brother...and to sweet Alley.

6. I am so sorry to hear that.
May the furbaby rest in peace. I am going through a similar thing right now. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes in June. He is still not stablized and I think I have spent close to $1000 so far (I am not rich either.) I am starting to get concerned about the quality of his life and my bank account is not endless. I may have a decision to make soon as well. I am glad your brother stayed with her until the end. It's not an easy thing to do.

7. Reminds me of the crappest day of my life.
I had to put Matty, the wonder cat down, only to get a phone call a few minutes later that my wife had a tumor. The tumer turned out to be metastatic esophageal cancer, which killed her 14 months later. I sure could have used ol Matty that night, she was such a love.

10. It's been 11 years since I had my first cat put to sleep.
Her name was Ali and I found her by the side of the road when she was 3 days old, covered in fleas. She was nearly 20 when I had her put to sleep. I was with her when they did it and I was ready for it. What I was not ready for is that it would take them 3 tries to find a vein to use. By that time I was totally in tears. But she had nearly 20 good years and had to be a fighter to survive. Hence, the name Ali.

12. When my brother found Alley
she was a feral kitten. She was mere weeks old without a home (and Alaska winters can be harsh) so he took her in and raised her from a baby. Alley was terrified of people to start, but it didn't take long before she was a lap kitty. She would drool from sheer joy of being pet. :)
Poor girl, she had a good life in the end.

11. I am so sorry - it is such a difficult thing to decide,

But that is so odd, my son/daughter-in-law had to do put their cat down today out in Portland. I haven't heard from them yet.

He had her for 10 years - they thought it was liver problems.
