Dear Lounge, I'm curious - how many of you first thought I was male?
I've had a few online tell me in the past that I seem male in my writing ("There's a difference?" I wondered.) But I'm curious - who here surmised that I was male? Or did you immediately assume I was female? Or neither?

Sincerely,

Lola.

1. No assumption here from your writing.

3. Well, I had thought you were male at first,
but I also had you confused with Bikewriter for a while, so I don't think it was your style that misled me...

4. Actually, I figgered you were female
Looking back, I have no idea why. Although I do read an awful lot, so perhaps there's something to it.

6. I assumed "female" because of the user name
Not to be sexist (but I will be): I don't think a lot of guys would choose that label, even if they are writers.

5. I try never to assume anything
Sometimes I write male, sometimes I don't. I've had DUers assume I was male, too.

Not so much lately, though.

8. I didn't.
However, a DUer once thought I was married...to a man.

9. I've met DU'ers at protests who were surprised that I'm a man
They said based on what they've read of my posts they thought I was female.

10. I think gender "undeclareds" in the DU profile are ALWAYS female
And your profile says undeclared. Men have no motivation to choose "undeclared gender" because the prospect of sexism isn't an issue for them.

11. I think I knew you were a female
but that's because in one of the first posts of yours I saw you were talking about your husband.

12. At one point I assumed (emphasis on 1st syllable) that Writer is a guy
just like I would assume a poster named Doctor is a guy and a poster named Nurse is a woman. That's just my prejudices working there. At one point I remember, long time ago, reading something you wrote and went "Hmmm, I think Writer is a chick," and thus pinged myself again about being sexist.

Anais Nin once wrote something about how men write from the penis so women should write from the womb. I didn't understand that then when I read it and I don't understand that now. I don't think it has anything to do with how you hold the pen, however.

14. I thought you were a writer.
Writers can be either gender.

(I've been told that I'm a lot older in my writing, as well as being male, female, and lots of other things....)

15. When you said something about the difficulty of shaving your
legs, I surmised you to be female.

And I do enjoy your poetry.

16. I would label your posts as "male"
and don't ask me what exactly I mean by that. But it was my first impression.
