He left the show because he was afraid of getting typecast.
IMHO Eccleson (the guy from last year) was excellent, and the current one just seems to be missing something in comparison.
But to each their own.

It was like watching the new Darren on Bewitched, I was confused. I just got used to the new Dr. who and now I have the new, new Dr. Who.
I think they kept the majority of their production crew and writers.

I tried to watch the new one, but argh. Dr Who is *2* hours long, has good writing and crummy special effects, not bad writing and excellent fx.
